Hardwood Below Carpets?

Hardwood Below Carpets?

I am often asked whether there is hardwood flooring below wall-to-wall carpeting. You may be able to determine this by lifting heat registers or lifting corners of carpets. In many cases, the carpet is laid over subfloor. If there is hardwood below, you should be cautioned, the floor underneath may not be suitable to remove the carpet. In older homes, hardwood can be sanded to create a new appearance. There is a limit to how often tongue-and-groove floors can be sanded. Modern 3/8 inch thick hardwood flooring can only be sanded once without risk of exposing the tongues.
