I recently replaced the roof on a ten by twelve foot storage shed. The old roof was standard composition shingle and was in very poor condition. It had to be stripped to the rafters. I had never used any roofing materials except standard shingles.
I had heard from several sources that the cost of materials is very similar but metal roofing was cheaper since the cost of labor was less on metal roofs. When I priced the materials I looked at three alternatives: three tab asphalt composition shingles, corrugated metal roofing and “builder’s panel” which is thirty eight inches wide and has squared style raised panels. The lowest cost option was corrugated metal roofing but I didn’t like appearance. When including new plywood sheeting, felt paper, drip edges and shingles the costs came to $1.31 per square foot for the composition shingles. The builder’s panel material was eighty-eight cents per square foot.
The sources I had consulted were correct. There was a lot less labor installing the builder’s panel roofing material compared to shingles. So the metal roofing was a great option for me, less material cost and less labor. If you are doing a roof replacement, consider the options that metal roofing offers.
