So you're a "weekend warrior" and have bought your first rental property and are going to replace some of the shingles yourself; here are some helpful tips to insure you don't have roof leaks and the shingles stay in place. Make sure you get fasteners that are galvanized steel, stainless steel or aluminum. Galvanized steel are the most common. The nails should be a 12ga shank with a 3/8" head and should be long enough to penetrate through the roofing material and into roof sheathing a minimum of 3/4". Each shingle should be secured with a minimum of 4 fasteners. In my city which is considered a high wind area; The Building Official requires not less than 6 fasteners per shingle. Check with your local Building Official if necessary.
