I get asked regularly about why do we need GFI electrical outlets? GFCI receptacles are currently required in the United States for bathrooms and washrooms, outdoors, in garages, above counters for a kitchen sink or wet bar, and in unfinished basements and crawlspaces. Outlets on roofs and in boathouses also need FGIs. You don’t need them for a sump pump outlet nor do you need them for a refrigerator in an unfinished basement.
GFIs are required in modern construction in Canada at outlets in bathrooms and washrooms, as well as exterior receptacles. They are needed, for example, at carport receptacles, although not in garages.
You also need GFCIs for swimming pool equipment and whirlpool baths, although there are usually no receptacles involved.
Check with your electrician for other questions about a GFCI.

Homeowners may want to add them also when appliances call for them. We had to add some in our kitchen after buying a toaster oven. You would be surprised at the times that you may need them due to manufacturing of some products now, and the fire hazard they could create. My brother is a fireman and unplugs many things in his house.

You bring up a good point. Please pay close attention to your manufacturer warnings and add GFI plugs where needed. Some appliances and some areas in the home require GFI plugs. All other outlets will be just fine, as long that there is a GFI on the circuit of plugs.
All electrical questions should be addressed by a qualified electrician.
