AC Condenser Coils

AC Condenser Coils

I get asked the question all the time: How can you tell if the AC Condenser Coil, that sits outside is bad? The best way to determine if the coil is bad is to do a visual inspection and if you can run the AC than do so. After 10 min of running the AC, the air should be cool to the touch.
What to look for; Damaged fins reduce airflow and heat transfer, adversely affecting system performance, comfort and costs. Corroded fins are common, particularly on older units. The implications of a corroded coil are the same as those of a dirty or damaged coil.
Your looking for a dirty coil or damaged fins. You can shine a flashlight through the coil to make sure it is not plugged up.
Make sure the condenser is sitting on a pad so that it is above the soil. A cabinet that is partially buried in dirt will be subject to accelerated corrosion.
Dryer and water heater vents should be about 6 feet from the condenser. Look for lint in the coil.

I have seen one that was all stuck together

the air seemed to run fine though and cool with no problem.

Stuck Together!

I would take into consideration your concerns and check the condenser very thorough and if you need to have a specialist come out, you may take that into consideration. If I had any doubt, I would just plan on replacing and put the cost of replacement in my offer formula. I would rather be safe than sorry.

HAPPY REHABBING!!!
