As a Renter Nation are We Entering a Form of Feudalism?

From Wikipedia: Feudalism was a set of legal and military customs in medieval Europe that flourished between the 9th and 15th centuries, which, broadly defined, was a system for structuring society around relationships derived from the holding of land in exchange for service or labor.
People owned land, and those who did not traded services in return for living on the land or using it. An entire class was subservient to the property owners, working the land they didn’t own, paying rent, or performing other services for their domicile.
Recently a prominent housing blogger wrote about the fact that the U.S. is moving toward becoming a renter nation, with the ownership of more and more homes moving to large investors, institutions and other major buyers scooping up foreclosures. Ownership is concentrating into the hands of fewer and fewer entities and the number of renters is increasing exponentially.
The control of the inventory for sale is one way in which would-be buyers are forced out of the markets. Banks have become better at processing foreclosures and are now metering them out to slow the flow. This helps to increase prices by keeping inventory low. In some states there are foreclosures that are still in process after three years or more.
Now with prices rising and interest rates rising as well, fewer buyers will be in the market, and competition among investors is heating up for the properties available. The government helped to concentrate ownership by selling thousands of homes in multiple bulk purchases to major investment companies.
OK, so why should we be concerned as investors? We shouldn’t, other than trying to make sure that we can get our share of the pie. It’s unlikely that the “American dream” is dead. It’s more likely that it’s postponed waiting for better times. We can do the rental thing until those times are here and then sell with nice profits on the other end.
