I just went through Dean's big book showing his deals from 2010-2012. The majority of the purchases were bulk tax sales. How does this differ from buying tax liens?

So I am a little confused on what your asking.
if it was bulk tax sales then he bought just a ton of tax liens. So they would not differ at all except that he bought a lot of liens at once.

When I hear "bulk" I just think a lot or tons.
So by bulk tax sale purchases I am thinking lots of tax liens &/or tax deed purchases at once.
So same thing.
Buying properties in BULK vs. buying tax lien certificates...
Could be a lot of properties from the same portfolio or Bank-owned Bulk properties (Bulk REOs/Repos) bought altogether, much like Blackstone and other hedge funds, or heavy-hitter REIs buy with their big bucks. Some being bought at 50-60%, others bought at 80-90% below market value. Properties can be acquired much cheaper when bought in bulk lots.
