I purchased my LLC from legalzoom, but they want me to name a registered agent if I dont' use them. If I do use them, I think it is more expensive. What is a registered agent's duties and why do I need one? Can I use someone in my family if there is no expense or requirements from them other than to be a responsible adult? I just don't know what to tell them.

Hi Shirley, I have a registered agent. They come in handy when your business gets mail, they sort out what is important. Also mail goes to their address so it doesn't have to come to your home address.
Give god the glory to all who praise him.
Thanks, I called them and they explained it. I used the registered agent's address also.

a registered agent is also known as a statutory agent. It is the person (or entity) that is required by state law to be located in the state so that your corp/LLC can be served notice for legal action and/or other notifications. All LLCs/Corps need one and they can be yourself if you live in the state that the entity is formed.
