Focus to Get What You Want

Focus to Get What You Want

Several years ago I was fortunate enough to get involved in real estate. My background is in Advertising and Marketing. For more than 15 years I worked with small and medium sized businesses helping them to market their companies and get the word out about the products and services they offer. About eight years ago that changed when I went to work for a small real estate related company to help out with their marketing.

At the time I knew nothing about real estate. I jokingly tell my coaching clients the only thing I knew about real estate was how to write out my rent check to the landlord. I had never owned my own home let alone any investment property.

While I was working for this company my boss encouraged me to begin setting goals. He had risen from a very poor background to living in a 15,000 square foot mansion surrounded by 350 acres. Even though I don’t believe people should be measured by their material possessions he was definitely a model of business success. He was someone I knew I should listen to and take advise from.

Over the next few months I began doing exactly what he told me to do. He said write goals, I wrote my goals. He showed me that he would write his goals down over and over again every single day. Again, if it worked for him I felt it should work for me. It was a few months before I even noticed a difference in myself or the things around me. But after being faithful in staying focused on my goals I began seeing opportunities.

About 3 to 4 months into this process I saw an opportunity and pursued it along with a business partner. My number one financial goal during this period was to earn $100,000 in a 12 month period. If you measure the time from when I began writing these goals and focusing on them until the time this goal was accomplished it was about 12 months and one week. I was now convinced that this “goal setting stuff” worked. But, as I really analyze that experience it was more than the goal setting it was the focus that came from continually keeping those goals in mind. Because this mentor encouraged me to keep those goals in front of me on a daily basis by writing and rewriting them it meant that each day I was making decisions that would lead me toward the accomplishment of those goals.

Once you know what it is you want, stay focused on that thing. I believe that the intensity of your focus has a direct correlation to the likelihood of you accomplishing those goals.

So, Focus to Get What You Want!
