Wire Sizes

Fourteen gauge wire is the most common in residential branch circuits, in the United States. 12 gauge wire is currently required with 20-amp breakers for at least two circuits. This is not the case in Canada.
Twelve gauge wires are used for some electric baseboard heaters, water heaters, dish washers, garbage disposals, private well pumps, etc.
Ten gauge wires are typically used for air conditioners, saunas, electric clothes dryers, some electric water heaters, some cooktops and ovens, etc.
Eight gauge wires are used for stoves and large air conditioners.
(This is all copper wires were talking about.)

cmitchell,

Thank you for sharing this information on gauge wire with us. As investors look at potential deals, electrical can be a big ticket item to update or upgrade. As we build our power team and find memebrs it is always good to know some of the right questions to ask. If you know a little on a subject, it could go a long way with your contractor. A little knowledge can make contractors a little more honest with estimates as well as materials used in projects. Believe and Achieve! - Joe
