OfflineFourteen gauge wire is the most common in residential branch circuits, in the United States. 12 gauge wire is currently required with 20-amp breakers for at least two circuits. This is not the case in Canada.
Twelve gauge wires are used for some electric baseboard heaters, water heaters, dish washers, garbage disposals, private well pumps, etc.
Ten gauge wires are typically used for air conditioners, saunas, electric clothes dryers, some electric water heaters, some cooktops and ovens, etc.
Eight gauge wires are used for stoves and large air conditioners.
(This is all copper wires were talking about.)
