I would caution you as to placing a letter in any mailbox. When getting into someone's mailbox you could be opening yourself up to many unforseen troubles. The USPS has a monopoly on letter delivery to mailboxes see this notice from the USPS:
CHAPTER 83--POSTAL SERVICE
Sec. 1725. Postage unpaid on deposited mail matter
Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits any mailable matter such as statements of accounts, circulars, sale bills, or other like matter, on
which no postage has been paid, in any letter box established, approved, or accepted by the Postal Service for the receipt or delivery of mail
matter on any mail route with intent to avoid payment of lawful postage thereon, shall for each such offense be fined under this title.
Not to mention if someone accused you of taking something from their mailbox! Just a huge liability all the way around! Simply pay the postage, or deliver the letter to their front door would be my recommendation. I hope that this information helps!

I was thinking the same thing salden.As far as the letter to the home owner i would sample the 1-800# scripts in Profit From Real Estate Right Now and make one of those to fit my comfort zone.I think putting a letter like that on someones door is cheesy,I would find the postage and mail it to them.
