Making a room appear larger than it really is

When we are looking to remodel a home, one of the big hurdles we always have is to try to make smaller rooms look big. It can sometimes be tough to do. I found this article that gave me some really good ideas to help with this problem. I hope you enjoy this article that I found, and learn something.

Your bedroom should be a retreat, a place to relax and escape the hassles of everyday life. But if your boudoir is small and cramped, it can feel more like a fugitive’s hideout than a calming hideaway.
Make the most of your scant square footage with these tips, direct from designers.
Choose furniture carefully
Chicago-based interior designer Edyta Czajkowska of Edyta & Co. says homeowners with small bedrooms shouldn’t crowd their spaces with too much furniture. Instead, stick to three key pieces: a great bed and two nightstands.
“In a small bedroom you should choose fewer yet larger pieces,” she says. “As a result, the bedroom looks grander and the eye focuses on the few select pieces rather than many small ones, which can make the room feel choppy and cluttered.”
To give your bedroom a focal point, Czajkowska suggests dressing up your bed with a large headboard. It anchors the room and creates visual interest without taking up valuable floor space.
Maximize your storage
Clutter is the enemy of any small space. This is particularly true in the bedroom, where piles of clothes, shoes and jewelry can easily overtake everything. Avoid the mess and get creative with smart, space-saving solutions.
“Take advantage of that often forgotten space under the bed,” advises Lori May of Lori May Interiors, an Atlanta-based interior designer and winner of HGTV’s "Design Wars." “You can use under-bed boxes, baskets or even space saver bags to store off season items or things that you wear less often.”
Another option is to forgo the traditional nightstand. “Choose a small dresser to use as a bed side table and you will be able to take advantage of all those drawers,” May says.
Let the light in
Natural light is the easiest way to instantly make your room feel larger. Let it flow freely into your room as much as possible through bare windows or sheer curtains. A little sunlight will do wonders for your space – and your mood.
When you’re ready for some shut-eye, Czajkowska says a simple blackout shade will do just the trick.
To keep things cozy at night or on gloomy days, bring in some artificial light. In a small room, May recommends wall mounted lighting in favor of table or floor lamps to save space. Play with wattage and placement to figure out what lighting options make your room feel biggest.
Happy Investing!

Coach M,

Thanks for sharing the tips on making a room appear larger. We buy many 3 bedroom homes that are 1,000 to 1,200 square feet in size. The larger the rooms look, the more people will like the home to rent or buy. This will usually equal more money in our pocket! You are the man! Believe and Achieve! Smiling - Joe
