7 Curb Appeal Blunders you CAN and SHOULD avoid!

Are you thinking of selling your home? If so, it’s time to consider how to maximize your property’s curb appeal. Just make sure you avoid these seven common mistakes identified by HGTV’s FrontDoor.com experts. This is a great website with some nice information for both Buyer's and Sellers. Andrew T. Vinarski with Primary Residential Mortgage (717) 975-2040 shared it with me.

1. Dead on Arrival: Gardens may not look great out of season, but spruce them up by getting rid of dead leaves and plants. And whatever you do, don’t “plant” artificial flowers, which are the epitome of tackiness.

2. Personal Possessions: Religious statuary, lawn ornaments, and kids’ toys scattered around are a huge faux pas. Also purge the deck or patio of “cute” decorations and unnecessary furniture.

3. Cluttered Driveway: A car parked in the driveway tells potential buyers that the house isn’t big enough, so you had to store the overflow in the garage and park your vehicle outside. It’s also distracting in photos.

4. Un-kept Neighbors: Unfortunately, a nearby home with lawn care problems has a negative effect on surrounding properties. Politely ask neighbors to keep their grass mowed or offer to lend your own elbow grease to the effort. Trust me it’s worth the effort!

5. Upkeep Nightmare: Even if you’ve spent the last decade turning your entire yard into a beautiful garden, potential buyers might see it as a high-maintenance nightmare. Talk to your real estate agent about how to make the landscape seem more user-friendly.

6. Neglected Eyesores: The rusted-out carport and tattered awnings have been there so long, you no longer notice them. But buyers will. Getting rid of worn, outdated, or mismatched features of your home’s exterior can dramatically improve its curb appeal.

7. Odd-paint Colors: Since most homes have seen a bit of wear and tear, consider a fresh coat of paint. Opt for neutral color on siding, but add touches of color on the front door and shutters to avoid a sterile appearance. jdaniels
