Jack Posts?

Jack Posts?

Do any of you know what jack posts are? An REO truth in housing inspection says the columns and beams are too close to the earth and jack posts are recommended. It sounds expensive and maybe saying RUN AWAY but I just wanted to know what they are.

Jack Posts

Jack posts are not that expensive. I have seemn them as low as $35.00 each and some up to $45.00. It is good to have concrete footings under each jack post for strong support.
The labor costs of putting them in may be the largest expense.

You can see a small picture of a Jack Post on this web page.....

Jack posts

Well...I once had a house built in 1858 and back in those days they built the houses so close to the ground a body could hardly squeeze under the house. In places under these houses they also would use big slab rocks when the ran short on wood...to save money too.

Through the years as the house continued to settle the house became so low to the ground it needed to be jacked up to be level again. My contractor reccomended jack posts with concrete footings so the house would not continue sinking or getting lower to the ground.

The jack posts are metal as compared to the wooden beams that are there now. Metal will last for years. The jack posts can get your house up to where it will pass the truth in housing inspection. Just make sure you get a contractor that has worked with jack posts and knows how to get the house up to where it is required to be.

Thanks

Thank you very much for the info. In MN we have basements but I can see how this could work.

Your house probably has jack posts in the basement They are supporting the metal beam running down the middle of the house. They are two to three inch in diameter metal posts with a threaded bolt on one end. The bolt can be turned to extend the length of the post to support the main floor/or other support beam and level the floor.
