I was wondering if anyone knew about winterizing vacant properties for the winter.

Is there anyone who knows how to do this?

after you shut off the water. Drain all the water pipes and hot water heater if you have one, put anti freeze in the toilet tank and bowl as well as the sinks. Leave all the valves open. That should do it.

LOL I know this is going to sound really silly but the water is not on in the property and hasn't been for some time. How do I drain the pipes and what valves do I look for?

Well I spoke with pmi and with my realtor and they both suggested a plumber or handy man. I was just thinking I wonder if we can do it our selves?
B.C. It sounds like what your saying is perfect except I am totally clueless about the valves? and How much antifreeze do I pour in? LOL also someone said something about wrapping and insulating the pipes?

Sorry. I drain the system in my place in the mountains after every visit in the winter. That is how I do it. You might be better off having a plumber do it. If the water has been off for a while ,maybe they drained it already.
get a few price quotes if you go with a plumber.
best of luck

turn on all water faucets from top to bottom even the outside spigots. If you really want to fully, get an air compressor hook it up to the clothes washer spigots and blow out the lines that way. Then do your anti freeze in the traps and toilets don't forget to flush the toilets and anti freeze the back. Turn off all the breakers but the heat source. lock up all windows and doors. close the blinds so few can see in.
Some people like to leave some of the electric on and have timers with lights.
a bit late, since it's already spring, but you never know...
use foam tubular sleeve insulation for your pipes outdoor-they are sold at any large hardware store (Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.; you just need to cut them to the right length...
Make sure the antifreeze you use in the toilets is the "RV Antifreeze" type; you don't want to pour car antifreeze into the drains...

It's true ~ This is the way they blow out the sprinkler systems, too, which isn't a bad Idea to do if the house has one for front n back yards.
