Attorney says "You're Asking for Trouble!"

Attorney says "You're Asking for Trouble!"

Hello Everyone!

I'd just like to share a strange encounter:

Earlier today I spoke with an attorney (intellectual property) regarding another issue of mine and he asked what I did for a living. Well, even though I just began the RBBP on August 5th, I blurted out that I was a Real Estate Investor...a "Private Real Estate Investor." He then proceeded to lecture me on how risky blah blah blah that was. He asked if I had a Real Estate license to "Wholesale" and/or Flip properties...I told him no, I use my realtors...and he gave me "that look" like I was an amateur from an info-commercial. He also stated that having a business card which reads: We/I Buy AND Sell Houses...is "Asking for Trouble!" Representing myself as someone who buys/sells and makes a commission.

He was dead serious. Anyway, instead of attempting to explain myself, I thanked him for his time regarding my intellectual property issue and left.

I just wanted to share that story.

Other than that does it really make a difference if one puts "We" versus "I" or "Buys"...or "Buys" and "Sells" on business cards??? Which do most people use???

Thanks!

Ron and Ingrid,

here's a little story:

A guy phones a law firm and says, "I want to speak to my lawyer." The receptionist says, "I'm sorry, but your lawyer died last week." The next day the same guy phones the law firm and says, "I want to speak to my lawyer." Once again the receptionist replies, "I'm sorry, but your lawyer died last week."

The next day the guy makes his regular call to the law firm and say, "I want to speak to my lawyer." "Excuse me sir," the receptionist says, "but this is third time I've had to tell you that your lawyer died last week. Why do you keep calling?" The guy replies, "Because I love hearing it!"

Hope you enjoyed the story, but really, there are a thousand different opinions from a thousand different lawyers. Only you can choose the right decision for your situation.

ROFLMAO!! Thanks for the great laugh!

Attorneys

I think most attorneys don't actually understand what RE investors are trying to accomplish. They often think everyone in RE should be licensed, and that's not the law. You have a better shot at having an understanding attorney if you use an attorney that specializes in RE. However, most attorneys want to protect their client to the absolute max so they can kill a lot of deals. I use an attorney that is on my side and understands what I am doing. It's the opposing attorney that often causes the problem. They should work together to make deals happen not be treating us like an adversary.

Great Story

Glad to hear you didn't try to explain but just walked away, best thing to do! Made me laugh too!

I/WE BUY HOUSES! Doesn't matter. I like 'we' myself because I don't think of myself doing it alone anymore. You have a whole team that you build and work with to get the job done; and you have buyers (we); my own opinion of course.

Surely you've heard the one

Surely you've heard the one about the man who put his 3 sons thru college. They were all very successful...an attorney, a doctor, and a real estate investor. The man had one request of his sons. Boy's, he said, I've put you all thru college and now you are all successful. The one thing I ask when I leave this earth is that you all place $10,000 in my casket as a token of your appreciation. The attorney walked up and put $10,000 cash in the casket, followed by his brother the Doctor. Then the son who was a real estate investor came up to the casket, wrote a check for $30,000 and took the other $20,000.
