Contacting Local Title Insurance Companies

Contacting Local Title Insurance Companies

I live in a borough of New York City and I have been contacting several title insurance companies trying to get information about a few ugly houses I am interested in buying/assigning. The problem is, none of these companies are willing to give out information on houses that are not on the market. In my case, the owners of the houses I am interested in don't have their houses on the market, as the houses are not even for sale. I want to get information on the owner as well as history on the house. I don't want to contact the owners without doing my homework first, so I'm kind of stuck. Zillow.com has some of the information I need, but I can't get the phone number of the owner nor can I find info on the original loan. If someone has a suggestion on what I should do, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

New York City is unique in many aspects and particularly in real estate! You need to find out what department sends out the real estate tax bills, that department should have last known address of the party that has paid the last tax and how current they are on their taxes.

First off, thanks for your response. Secondly, I have found the site that has the information about how current the homeowner is on their taxes. I can see what their payment is, if they are up to date and if not when they stopped paying. As far as that aspect goes, Im fine. I cant seem to get the information on the mortgage or if there even is one. I want to know how much, if any is owed, what they paid for the property and check if there are liens on it. I feel these are very important things to know. I will apply different strategies depending on this information. I feel I can not move on further without doing this. Now I suppose I can pay for a title search, but I would have to do that after contacting the owner because It doesn't make sense to spend over $100 on a title search for a property before knowing if the owner is even willing to sell.
