OK, so here's the thing, when someone asks how to find information on a particular property there have been many responses and they all point toward going through public records. Now, my problem seems like a backwards situation because the online search fields ask for the very info that I'm trying to find.
So instead of just inputing an address it asks for the owners name (i don't know it) or the parcel number (again, don't know).
I'm trying to find info on some, what appears to be long abandoned land space as well as some empty houses that are'nt listed and have no signs.
To be fair though, at the time of this writing I don't have a realtor on my team as of yet and I know a good one would be helpful here, there are other circumstances to this but I won't get into making excuses for this.
I guess the question is how do you find the very info using public records that they require for you to use their web page?

I think I just answered my own question but I'd like to see what anyone else has to offer. I was able to find a name to use in public records using whitepages.com and tomarrow I'll see if this helps me with public records.
Again, my ears (ro rather eyes) are always open to other ideas.

go to your city/county website to the tax assesors, property search/records and enter the street or address. Info will come up on who owns it.
In my town you can even go by subdivisions, streets, owners name, etc
try search on some one you know

Yea, I googled my couty tax assessor and found that nearly every other county around mine has an option for property tax searching, my county only has the address of the down town St. Joseph office. I've been there before about four years ago when I was trying to set up a business (getting a DBA) but that project was a wash. I may have to go to the office in person.
Thanx for the suggestion though, mabe another idea? something creative? I found that the white pages can only get me so far, so not a whole lot to tell there.

Because I've found a duplex in my neighborhood that's currently vacant on both sides and figured I could try snatching it up and renting out the other side as a way for me to get my family out of our two bed appartment and get my first deal under my belt.
I'm thinking I may have to knock on some doors and see if the person who owns it may also own the one next to it.

Yep....knock on some doors and talk to the neighbors- they usually know quite a bit
you may to physically visit the clerks office to get the info

Hey TL! I have been doing some research of my own lately and I found that with some properties you can look on Zillow.com and find that info when you input the address. When the property details page comes up on the left side of the page you will see the property info (bedrooms, bathrooms, sq. ft., etc) and under that it will say "More Facts". Choose that link and a pop up will appear with more info on the home and the Parcel ID is usually listed there....I am a very motivated newbie myself and that has helped tremendously when I can't find the property with the address or need to link to the county site....Good luck with everything and I hope this helps!
That's the kind of creative thinking that gets noticed! Thanx Sarita
This works great with SFH but not with multi family (i.e. multiple addresses on the same building)
I'd still like to be able to find this information on duplexes to though.
Went back to it and there was a sign in the window with a name and number, so there's something for me to work with. The neighbors were gone when I went back there (probably working and at school) so I'll stick whith what I know for now.

I guess you could always try the JBToggs idea of putting a for sale sign in the yard....owner sees or hears about it and calls you

In my area, I can look a lot of stuff online. However, the internet wasn't always around. If I go down to the county records, there should be maps that I can look at that would tell me the parcel ID. I just need to know the address so that I can try and make sure I'm looking at the right map.
The more thorough the question, the more thorough the answer.
Please fill out your profile with as much info as you're comfortable with.
Thanks.
when you place them on the lawn, but to me it seems like something I'd only want to do if there were no other options; also seems kind of like an aggressive pretence to 'force' the attention of the owner. I'd much rather not come out of the shadows guns a-blazin'.
Still the concept may just come in handy with the ones who are hard to get a hold of.

Look to see if your county offers online GIS maps.
In my county's GIS map I get: property lines, owner's name, property address, assessed taxes, last sales price, school district, tax number, lot frontage, lot size, deed book #, deed page number, school district, year built, date & time of last sale, building style, sq footage, acreage and more.
A neighboring county has pretty much the same info.

I found out about the GIS Interactive maps for my area some time ago however, I just took your suggestion and WOW! The informaion is open to the public free of charge for the month of October.(2011) I'm going to have to look into how much they're charging because just what little I've seen in just a few minutes is staggering thank you for reminding me of this awsome resource!
