The wire stands that came with my bandit Signs from SignWarehouse would not go more than 1 inch in this ROCKY soil here in MT. The little wires just bent and got ruined. I had to get physical with it.
The tools you need to do the job in HARD soil are no big deal:
-- 2 pound hammer (called a hand drill) with an 18" handle. It's like a mini sledge hammer.
-- 4 BIG nails from the hardware store -- 12" monsters are about $2 each -- 5/16" diameter or so. Get the extra 2 since they can get bent also.
-- knee pads.
Because the Zoning Officer is calling me daily now (!!!) I am putting my signs up after work on Friday nights and will take them down Sunday nights. Too bad that the police are rolling around moreso at that time, but what the heck. The fact that it's dark out and I am wearing navy blue makes it a bit easier, but I'm still a bit nervous!
I have the signs all ready to go with the stands taped in place so the signs will not blow off. With the knee pads velcroed on, I park the truck at a major corner and take 4 signs with me, plus the hammer and monster nails. Bang one nail in place with 3" to spare, lay the sign down with the lower pin touching the nail and use the other pin to point where the other nail ought to be. Bang it in, too. Then tap fairly hard on the side of the nail (all around) to loosen it up for removal. Leave the sign laying there so that the holes do not get lost in the grass, etc. Then tip the sign up and drop it in. Voila! Work the entire intersection in 10 minutes and SPLIT like a . . . . . . like a bandit!
