Wife probably heard too many horror stories where investors lost their shirts because they were under the false impression that real estate investing was easy and for everyone. On the contrary, it's all too easy to fail especially if you're not on top of the continuously evolving market. Too many moving parts in all directions and all at the same time. Unless it's your primary career, the challenges are many. The fundamentals are no different than any other type of business, but yet people still think it's the easy route. Since statistically most start ups fail within the first year, there is absolutely no reason to think real estate has a better chance.
Personally, I would be reluctant to push or convince anyone to get involved unless they show genuine interest. Unlike other investments, a loss in real estate may be financially fatal because of the large amount of money and legal issues involved. So I'd say, it's best to steer away from the reluctant wife.
P.S. - Everything else is immaterial, irrelevant, and unnecessary.
Some people are just destined to work the 9 to 5. They know all the reasons why things won't work. Successful REI investors (where more wealth has been created than any other business)don't get dropped off on top of the mountain.
