What are Thoughts on Working with Re Agent That's a Former & Recent RE Investor?

Hello everyone! I searched the site to see if this has been at topic of discussion and I didn't see it listed (though I certainly could have overlooked it).I recently went to an open house where I spoke at length with the hosting agent. Though I didn't share at the time that I was a new investor he revealed he was a new RE Agent but previously had spent more than 10 years as a successful Real Estate Investor. What are your thoughts and suggestions about working with a former (and recent) RE Investor turned RE Agent? He didn't reveal why he chose to get out of that and enter the field from the Agent side. He was very nice and I tucked this information away until now.

I see pros and cons of this situation. I've seen some posts that have mentioned someone's agent is a current investor, but I'm wondering if it's generally a positive experience? On the surface it seems like it would be a great thing as he would be friendly toward investors and could offer some great help and advice. On the flip side, my gut tells me it could also be a situation where he steers me to the way he would do things which may or may not be what would be best, or could be at odds with what I'm learning here and through Dean's books.

Should I go ahead and approach him to have a discussion? Or is this a situation best left alone?

My thanks to all who offer their thoughts and experiences.

All the best,
Nancy

I say talk to him

Nancy, I think you may be missing a great oportunity if you don't talk to him. You would need to explain what you are intending to do and how you intend to do it. His experiance could be very helpful to you. He should understand how investors find, make offers, and finance deals. If he is not comfortable with your plan,or you are not comfortable with him, then walk away. He may also have some great connections. All you have to lose is a little time.

Good Luck, Al

Nancy,

I agree with Al. This might be an awesome opportunity for you. He will have wisdom and experience. Who knows what his reasons were for getting out. Maybe he made it really big already but just wants to enjoy some sort of connection to RE. Or maybe he didn't have the tools we have and had a bad experience and doesn't care for it anymore. Either way, he'd be great to talk to and might turn out to be the best partner (agent) you could ever find! I'm anxious to hear what you learn! Keep us posted. Smiling

Rina

My thanks to Al & Rina

Thank you Al and Rina for your comments. You are both correct that this could really be a great opportunity. I was just feeling overly cautious as I've had not too pleasant experiences in my other profession working with people who no longer work in the same field as I do but try to "run the show." I have to realize that this is a whole other ballgame and his experience and new found RE agent career could be an amazing benefit to me...if he's interested in working with me of course! I'll defintely contact him after the holiday weekend when I'm back in town and keep you all updated!

All the best,
Nancy

Nancy great job on being patient!!!
Randy

And my thanks to Randy for his input

Your response is very much appreciated. I am a "go with my gut" kind of person and at that meeting where I lucked into finding a former real estate investor turned new real estate agent, it didn't feel like the right time for me to say "hey, I'm an investor." Patience does have his virture. Plus, I genuinely like learning about people. I'll be contacting the agent this week and I'll update here how the conversation goes!

Much thanks,
Nancy
