Anyone ever heard of chinese drywall? I was speaking to a FL RE agent and said there have been cases of tis 'chinese drywall'. It gives off a gas that can disdroy your ac and heating systems. All duck work has to also be replaced, and ofcorse the dry has to be ripped out of the whole house. When it starts to 'go bad' it smells like rotten meat, and has black mold like spots coming through to the surface. Builders along with realtors are being targeted for legal action.
Anyone experience this? The chinese drywall is said to have been available during 1989-2002.

The first congressional hearings on Chinese drywall will be held on Capitol Hill next week.
The Senate Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety and Insurance plans to meet at 10:30 a.m. on May 21.
The committee will investigate health and product safety issues associated with the drywall.
High-sulfur Chinese drywall has been blamed for fumes that cause an odor of rotten eggs, metal corrosion and alleged health problems in thousands of homes, mostly in the Southeast, and especially in Florida.
The growing product liability crisis has spawned federal and state lawsuits, including individual actions and class actions. The Florida Department of Health is tracking 365 reported complaints and investigating. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is also investigating.

Anita...
sounds like a big problem. Investors buying in FL make sure you check the house out for this drywall before you put in your offer!!! Factor this into your price. To fix this drywall issue could set you back about 30-40k...

Respiratory issues, other health concerns and are only a few of the problems claimed to be caused by toxic Chinese Dry Wall. Drywall is a flat board made from gypsum plaster, but Chinese Drywall can contain ash from coal burning power plants that has sulfur compounds in the mix. It is used to create interior walls for its economical cost, smooth appearance and fire-resistance.
The housing boom in the early-mid part of the decade has been noted as the beginning of the defective Chinese drywall problem. This problem is primarily affecting Florida, Virginia and Louisiana, where a housing boom earlier this decade led to shortages of domestic drywall. Normally, drywall is bought from domestic producers, but the building and new construction boom caused shortages, so some home builders, purchased Chinese Drywall.
Despite the Department of Health's assurance that there is "no immediate health threat" from Chinese Drywall, homeowners remain unconvinced about the fact that there is no urgent health threat in their homes. The experience of some homeowners who felt much better when traveling away from their residences for an extended period of time, have convinced many that the problem does in fact exists in their homes. About 60,000 to 100,000 U.S. houses are potentially affected with Chinese Drywall related problems.
Signs your home may have Chinese drywall issues.
One of the first signs of Chinese drywall is a strong sulfur smell, similar to the smell of rotten eggs.
Check for corrosion on your metal faucets, mirrors, jewelry, etc. Anything that contains decorative metal in your home should be checked for pitting, darks spots, or a dark discoloration. These are all strong signs of potential Chinese drywall.
Watch for failing appliances in your home. If your large appliances like TV's, air conditioning unit or refrigerator have stopped working or are not working efficiently, especially if they are relatively new, you may have a potential Chinese drywall issues in your home.
that seems to have this drywall. Do you know if it was used in any other states at all? They're asking 51K, its worth 185K, but if needs to be knocked down I'm not even going to pursue it.
Sounds nasty, google that
