Tomorrow a New Year will begin, and like most people, you will probably start the year off with New Year’s resolutions. Tonight I will look at my 2009 New Year’s Resolutions and check off which ones I accomplished.
I accomplished some, but not all. I accomplished things that never even made it on my resolution list. It never crossed my mind that I would start an LLC this past year, find private money or take over a real estate club, but I did. It is those “surprises” that let me say, “2009 was a pretty good year.” Despite those “surprise” achievements, I still feel like I could have done more to get those resolutions checked off.
One of my resolutions, and it is every year, is to lose weight. I didn’t even come close to that one. As a matter of fact, I think I gained weight. Of course, losing weight will be at the top of my resolution list for 2010. Another goal I set was to wholesale 10 deals in 2009. I didn’t come close to that one either. In truth, I have yet to complete a deal. Yes, I know it is shocking to some of you because I am knowledgeable in real estate, I run a club, I have a business, I have private money, etc. Believe me I tried to complete a deal, but I just couldn’t get it done. So, what was the problem?
Systems, follow up, perseverance, negative head talk, etc. Yep, looking back I realize that I took action, but I never followed through. If I hit a wall, I moved on to the next list of agendas. So many times I would get squashed on an offer, let it go, never follow up and find out a month or two later it had come back on the market, and sold at, or less than my original offer. Of course, the negative head talk takes over after every rejection and then you take a week off. When you start adding up those weeks they end up being a couple months of the year.
The most valuable thing I learned this past year is… perseverance. Yes, you need to press on. How ironic that I sign my name with “Press on…” written after it, but never pressed on to get the deal. I took some action, just not enough action. I used the “some” action to make myself feel good that I was “working” the business. In reality, I was procrastinating and putting my dreams on the back burner. Don’t we all do this at some point or another? Isn’t that how we justify not meeting our resolutions. We tell ourselves we took “some” action. We made “some” effort.
Some is not enough, especially in real estate. One of my mentors mentioned that we will go to a crappy job that we hate working at for 40 hours a week, making crappy wages and be content with it. However, we won’t go door knocking or call prospects because we think it is a crappy activity, but could generate 30k in one deal. If we spent just 40 hours a week for one month knocking on doors of people who are in pre-foreclosure, how many deals do you think we could accomplish? Perhaps we could do 10, 15, or 20 deals? Hmm… ten deals times 30k… that is 300k! I wouldn’t mind making 300k in the first 30 days of the New Year. How about you?
My point is that taking the half a** approach is not going to make you a real estate millionaire. No, things are going to be different this year. I am making plans, scheduling my real estate business, my weight loss and my family time like I schedule my day at that old J –O- B. Just like losing weight, if you don’t commit you’re not going to see a difference. If you want to be financially free and live your dreams then you need to commit to real estate not “some” of the time, but ALL of the time.
What are you going to do differently in your real estate business for 2010?

Hi KimmyJ you are so right I'm in the same boat as you are. Some is not enought I realy need to narrow what my goals are and then focus untill sucessful. I'm good at planing at work but when it comes to REI I want to do everything at once and them get frustrated and do everything half way. Time is running out I'm with the academy and I have until March 11 and I still had not done a deal. If i dont do this I will feel like a failure for wasting time and money. So back to your question what will I do differntly I will make sure to "follow up or pack it up." I will get my goals down in paper and make a plan of action not just say I want to earn x by 20xx but what will I do tommorrow or next week and check that I have done it. One step at a time. I enjoy all your post and are happy for you and Jason. Look for my PM.
Stop thinking just DO IT!
KimmyJ,
This year i am going to take true action in REI...I am going to live it!My first goal is create a massive buyers list(invester & retail)since i am a wholesaler and i want to focus on property other wholesalers have for sale, I see a window of opportunity there.I know a few people that have 500k+ in the bank and i am going to talk to them about my REI ideals and see if they want to partner up on some deals(wholesale). And last but not least...Get that first deal under my belt!!!
I know i can do really well in REI,I feel it in my heart..."We must stay focused"on our game plan!
Happy New Year Everybody
