that every little opening in the house where they've come in has to be cleaned so others aren't attracted and that they can fit into openings the size of a pen. Also have heard that putting a fake owl in the yard may help to ward them off. All of this is heresay haven't had to get rid of them inside of a house.
When we lived in CT at I could see flying around at night at one house we lived in. It reminded me of a scary movie. When we painted the outside of the house we took the shutters off and the bats were behind the shutters. Guess that explains why none of our neighbors had shutters on their houses. We didn't put them back up.
This house came with a long bat history that I didn't realize until after moving in. 4 years ago I hired an exterminator for many hundreds and it did no good. Then, last night at 3 am I woke up to a bunch of noise in my bedroom. Turned on the light to find a big brown bat flying in circles overhead. Why are the covers still so "safe" even at 57 years old? There I was, screaming with the covers over my head! Would have made a hilarious YouTube video.
Now, we can't find the darn thing. Also had another one fly in between me and the stove this morning.
Keep those ideas coming. Maybe I can pitch a tent on top of my bed and zip myself inside. Sigh!
LOL! I can only imagine you running and screaming. Most likely the bat doesn't have rabies...most don't. He wants away from you as bad as you want away from him.
During the day you have to hang a netting sheet from the top of the roof and let it hang down over the vents at the top ends of the roof where they come in. At night they will fly out of the vents and hit that netting and slide down it and fly away. They won't be able to get back in and meanwhile while they are out on their night time run for mosquitos and bugs...you slip up into the loft and totally cover where they are coming in. That should make them leave. After all if they are not paying rent you need to evict right? LOL!
of course looking back on it now, right?! I meant to say put an owl 'statue' in the yard (a natural enemy of a bat.) Try what sistreat said. Have you spoken with a bat exterminator? Like Tammy mentioned there are likely places who will get rid of them humanly for you.
In your attic you will probably see a lot of bat guanno (bat poo). This guanno needs to be removed as soon as you evict the bats. The guanno can make you very sick and cause breathing problems. It has an ammonia smell to it and it can be deadly if you breath it for very long.
Thanks for all the comments everyone.
I have 4 calls in to different exterminators. Just waiting for them to call me back.
NOT sleeping in my bedroom tonight, though. Have to put a mattress on the floor in one of the kids rooms. Kinda resent the fact that a critter that weighs about 2 ounces has taken me captive in my own house!!!!
Batproofing company has arrived and is sealing up every last nook cranny. (What's a cranny, anyway?) Should be guaranteed bat free within a week!
Breathing a little easier already!
Can't say I've ever had that pest problem! We had a bat hit our windshield when we were driving.
If you search on the internet there are places that humanly remove animals from homes. Here is one. http://www.humanewildlifecontrol.com/issues_bat.htm
Good luck!
