One of the 1st things I was taught in REI was "Only YOU can change YOUR situation in life". I was told to write this down and post it places You had to SEE it EVERYDAY.(bathroom mirror, car dashboard,TV,etc)
At the end of each day, ask yourself "what did I do today to get closer to my goal?"
It's true. You WILL need to learn REI and take ACTION as Dean teaches, but, it IS all up to YOU.
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
Set your Goals and Make a Plan to achieve them and just keep following the plan- step by step-...you WILL get there.
Set 30/60/90day goals and then 6/12/18 month Goals.
Where do you want to be in in 1yr,3yrs or 5yrs?
NO one learns at the same pace,so you have to keep pushing forward and keep going.
Follow step by step-NO shortcuts!
Avoid INFO Overload by picking ONE (1)niche, wholesale, apartments, billboards, laundrymats, etc.,
THEN take things to the next level.
Hold yourself accountable for what you did do or didn't do EVERY DAY.
HOW Bad do You want/need this? PROVE IT
YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU WANT OR NEED TO DO.
ONLY YOU can STOP You.
NOW GO GET SOME....Everyone else IS.
Now it's YOUR turn!

I have found that my thoughts are crucial in determining the direction of my life. I used to work for the government…talk about mentally and emotionally draining. I always thought that I should go to college, get a degree, and get a job for financial security. This is exactly the track I followed. I went to college for seven years, got a Master’s Degree and got a job in the public sector. I work there for over 4 years. In the beginning I was excited because I thought this was the ticket to a financially secure life. However, I quickly realized that I was on the fast track to NOWHERE. For the most part, I don’t think there is a bigger group of people that is angrier with life and their situations than government employees. Being around this day in and day out was debilitating.
To make a long story short I quickly got out of the public sector and began investing in real estate and I LOVE IT.
If there is one piece of life I could give someone it is this…becareful who you associate with. Those people will influence your thoughts and life. I’m sure you know this but is has been documented that a person’s income can be foretold by his/her 10 closest friends. If your friends are paycheck people then more than likely you will be too. If your friends are go getters and seek success then more than likely you will be too.
Yep, we are doing it, an inch each day...making progress!
Thanks for keeping us moving forward!
Love the DG Family, wish we found you a year or two earlier! Oh, well...just keeping push yourself forward and not looking back!

The goals and our WHY we made for ourselves we read daily, it helps us stay true to them.
Our dreams are BIG so we have to keep working on them little by little each day, one day we will have our system in place and things will be easier but for now its hard work and nobody is going to do it for us..
Its all on us and we want it that way, we are going to know our business from the inside out and plan on leading the way.

I think I know what you are talking about.
I have 4 nephews who are 25, 23, 21 and 13 years old. These guys lost both parents withing 6 months of each other two years ago.
These young men are amazing to me. They are each thriving and doing well in their lives. They keep in SERIOUS touch with each other. The three older brothers do not forget to include their younger brother in important activities.
They have not forgotten their parents. However, the four of them keep living and striving to meet their goals in ways their parents would be proud. In the beginning it was simply putting one foot in front of the other. By so doing they kept moving forward.
Many of us can learn from these young men. KEEP MOVING FORWARD. That is a major component of success. When things get tough, keep working. By so doing you will meet your goals.

This was the hardest part of beginning real estate investing. Society taught me that the best way to live life was on other people’s terms i.e. getting and working a JOB. I was programmed this way not by my parents but by surroundings and education.
All the years I spent working a job I felt there was more out there than just getting up an going to work hoping that my boss would SOMEDAY see that my efforts were adequate enough to MAYBE give me a raise or promotion. Well that day never came and another guy got the promotion and in my view he was in no way qualified. What’s worse is that he was now my supervisor. That was the end for me.
I started trying to find other means to make a living. However, I had a difficult time shifting my mentality to think that I could change my life without anyone else’s approval. Even to this day, when things get tough I start looking for jobs but every time I start looking for open positions I remember that it is up to ME, not my boss, to CHANGE my life.
This post is such a great motivator to me. I have no other choice than to live by these words. I'm thankful to God for the knowledge which I gained so far in REI. Each day I see myself having lots of self confidence doing great things (putting my knowledge into action) which I wasn't able to do yesterday or 5 months ago when I first started. would I have done it without out sticking to Dg.com? Heck no!
Thank you to everyone who weigh in on this post.
Happy investing

This is one post I feel we should either bookmark or post so that we can come back to it for strength
The advice given below truly hit hard especially the fact that it sums up to the individual, the action one must take, and the mindset to maintain with a vital pulse...... Once the mindset shifts, actions will follow, and results will emerge.....

Another good point made......
"Persistent and Consistent" I applied this with everything I did and learned one thing, people are a variable that will stunt your growth if you allow it, when one aspect is not coming to fruition it is time to redirect that energy to the other components that will yield results the universe will see this and respond accordingly think cause and effect

Thanks so much Mike for posting this up! Totally agree with everyone here about staying with it. I myself would be a perfect example in that although I've been trying REI for 3 years now and still haven't completed my first deal yet, I'm NOT giving up. I KNOW my time will come when I receive my ultimate breakthrough of having my first deal completed!
Great advice Karen, your words definitely sunk in well. And just like Dean has said, "You can't make a touchdown from the sidelines unless you get in the game." Or the way Matt Larson puts it nicely and that's to be "Persistent and Consistent". So in my own words....It's up to ME and nobody else to change my life forever!

It's interesting how only real estate investing requires so much talk, discussion, and energy over personal development, self improvement, and change. I've never encountered any other career or profession dedicated to so much debate over philosophies and techniques aimed at overcoming personal challenges. There is a whole cottage industry based on this angle alone. Sometimes it almost feels as though most investors are working harder on improving themselves than on making deals happen. It's like spinning their wheels on the false notion that they're somehow involved in real estate. In reality, it most likely has nothing to do with taking action. It's a feel-good approach to mask the procrastination. They spend countless amounts of money on this guru or that, but at the end of the day they are who they are. No amount of self-awareness can take the place of simply taking action....This is truly an amazing phenomenon unique to real estate!
P.S. - Everything else is immaterial, irrelevant, and unnecessary.
You said it: " No amount of self-awareness can take the place of simply taking action." Thanks for the reminder. Action conquers!
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" Phil 4:13
Paul why so much negativity?
Do you have any properties?
Let me ask you this_ is education free?
Again whats the cost of collage?
To my understanding everyone has read a book or two on REI that ever thinks about real estate and some find this site that they can ask any question they want and they WILL get an answer....Thank you Dean...
Why put down dreams people have? I don't understand...
Tell us about your action on REI?
Aaron
I would say what Dean says and that it is mindset that controls whether we do deals or not period. The techniques are the same for everybody so why arent people getting deals or more deals-its mindset!
its nothing else, mindset, we all have diff one's, the most successful have the mindset that is of a winner, they take action they are thinking positively etc. Dean is the one we follow & his top students & we have to copy them and what they say.
thats how we get things done. I would like to hear your deals CAREI and Mike

Go faster do more! GFDM!
You obviously did not get the gist of my comment. The incessant focus on self-improvement can become a barrier in and of itself. At a certain point one must graduate into the real world. For instance, one would not expect a college student to continue to show up in class after graduating. At a certain point, you'd expect the student to apply his/her learned skills in a real working environment. The same principle also applies to real estate students. Redesigning the wheel over and over will not make it any more rounder. Self discovery has its benefits as well as its limits. No amount of self-improvement will make the deals happen. Deals happen only when action is taken. Regardless whether you're polished or not, the world only takes notice when you create waves and stir the pot with massive action.
P.S. - Everything else is immaterial, irrelevant, and unnecessary.

No I got it. I agree after getting education you have to go out and take action BUT people learn in different ways and time frames. They have a name for it, "analysis paralysis" and some people just like to blog.
Not to sure about the stir the pot and create massive wave comment, people are here just to learn and they just want one small nugget to help them get that first deal not be Dean or Matt but learn how to better themselves, who are we to judge them I know im not..
Self improvement hmmmmm.
Sorry gotta go collect rent now.

Happy collecting
