Bandit Signs - Sneaky & Smart with Goggle Voice

Get a free Google Voice number and only use that one for your bandit signs. The service gives you total anonymity. The Zoning Officer will get calls about ILLEGAL signs and then try to determine if the number on the sign is a local land line -- then fine you if possible. Google Voice makes that impossible.

Plus, when you use your Google voice app to call people back, their caller ID only shows your Google voice number -- that's great.

Take the time...

Take the time to look through the list of available numbers when setting up your google voice account to see if you can make relevant words out of it.

For example I was able to find a number that had the word KEY (539) in it. Also try to get easy to remember numbers, all 4's or maybe pairs, 2255.

Look at your phone's number pad to see what numbers will and won't work. For instance, you don't want the numbers "1" or "0" if you're building a word because these numbers don't have corresponding letters.

That should be enough to get the gears turning. Smiling

I have google voice but

I was told when I call out to someone, they see my regular number and not the google voice number. How do I do the app, I guess that is what I need? Tammy

call w/google number

Mark K's picture

I don't have a smart phone so I do this through my google voice acct.
In your account you'll see a 'call' button.
Click on it and enter the phone number you're calling and the phone that you want to use to make that call with.
When you click on call it will ring your phone until you pick it up. As soon as you pick up it will call the phone number you entered and whoever's on the end of that call will see your google voice number instead of the phone # you're calling from.

Think of your google voice number as a mediator.

Thank you Mark for the

Thank you Mark for the information, but I don't quite understand. I know I have an account online, but I do use the phone, so wondering what is the easiest way to do this with just the phone??? Tammy

I just logged into my acct from my phone's browser at:

To get anonymity from your cell phone, start the call with *67 and then add the phone number you want to call. When calling on bandit signs and fliers, you DO NOT want everyone who is calling you to be able to bug you on your cell. Plus, the Zoning Officer has a hitman out for me!

Get those signs out there! Just Do It!!!

Voice numbers to pick

jiminmontana's picture

When you sign up with G Voice, you pick #'s in your area code of choice. I could not find any that were available that spelled anything -- and I spent a few hours doing that! What I did do it pick a number that is STUPID EASY to remember. And that took a while also, but MAN is it working well.

my number is in this format:

XYX.XYbc

and b + c = X

Wishing you all the best!

Star 67 shows a blocked call, so it might not get answered however. I, myself, tend to ignore these calls. Mark, I tried, but I am still trying. Can't seem to figure this out or get the app on my phone. Hmmmm. Thanks for your help though.

app

Mark K's picture

Looks like the only app available is for the iphone (which I'm not using so can't help you there).
I read on another site that all other apps were pulled because they were crashing too much.

Everything else is done through the mobile site http://m.google.com/voice
You log into your account and on the next screen you should see a 'call' button, might have to scroll down a little to see it.
Click on it and it's pretty much self-explanatory.

I am curious as well on how to use google voice. What does my cellphone need, to be able to use google voice? Does the phone have to be able to access internet?

@Jiminmontana, if the Zoning officer's hitman comes knocking on your door, send your little buddy in the photo out to meet him Smiling.

Google Voice app

jiminmontana's picture

Here is the link for phone apps:

http://www.google.com/mobile/voice/

Click the link to send to your phone. Wathc the video. When your phone connects to the google service, Google will know the type of phone that you use and send the correct app to your phone. Works with Android, BBerry, and iPhone.

You do not HAVE to have the app to use G Voice, although it is nice and allows you to call back people and they will see your G voice #, not the cell #. I use a BlackBerry. Without a smart phone, you can still get many of the G voice features. Once you set up your Gmail and then your G voice accounts, go to the G voice page and then click the gear in the upper right corner to go to settings. Tell G voice to send a notice of a new message to you as a text message. And click that you want a transcription of what the caller said. That's not perfect, but better than nothing. With a smart phone, you can click the LISTEN button to hear what they said without going to the app.

But smartphones are silly-cheap now and are important for your biz, so -- just do it if at all possible. Get one with a better camera if you are using the phone for pics of properties -- the Bberry is weak at 5 Mpixels.

Without the app for anonymity, I call back using the *67 tactic first. Will likely go to their voice mail -- that's OK -- leave a messsage and leave your G voice call back #. BYE

15 more signs up

jiminmontana's picture

I got off work at 11 pm last night -- Friday. Spent 1.5 hours putting up signs. Very few had been removed. Was shocked that ALL of them at Wal-Mart had lasted the week, even the most aggressively placed ones. Went further out and got to bed at about 1 am. The phone is ringing about every 20 minutes this morning, even though it is Opening day of elk / deer season here in MT.

Great Post
