Don’t suppose it’s purely a bad habit — negative or stressful life events have a tendency to stay with everyone longer than happy ones. It’s normal to spend time working through some events, when something went wrong, to learn from it. However, if negative thoughts are casting a shadow over a big part (or all of) your life, there are skills you can learn to stop them in their tracks.

One is to verbally and mentally take control of them - countering them. If you think ‘I’m worthless’ then say out loud ‘I am valuable and unique’…remember a situation where you felt valued, assured and calm. Bring that feeling to the front of your mind. There are quite a few other techniques, but today's Weekly Wisdom shares something else you can do to find a sense of joy and it works like a magnet in a bucket of nails…

YES INDEED

Ok Dean,

I also follow Joel, I get his daily notes sent to my email every day and go to his events every year, I also make sure I take someone new so they can experience this wonderful event. But today my supervisor who have been riding my back for 3 years came up to me for advice concerning her sick son. I had no idea the reason she has been looking so sad and not smiling when she came to work that her son was sick, so we talk civil for the first time. Wow!! G_D IS real. I also found out this weekend that I can go and get a lot of food to help someone in need for just a small donation at a food bank, and that is what I will do this year to help someone in need. I work in a place were everyone should be happy because we our dealing with mother's newborn babies coming into the world, but the day staff is so negative, this year things have gotten better and I continue to pray daily. Their will always be negative people around us I have learn not to feed into it on a daily basis, but as long as we are alive I realize their is always a chance to do better. So glad we have this weekly widsom every week. Thank you so much for your widsom:)

Cancel negativity

kita57's picture

Dean,
Amazing how you can just speak to our hearts. Back when I had cable, I watched Joel every week and he also had a way to see the world in a more positive light. That is the true secret. Being able to turn around the negative and actually see the world in a more positive way. When I find myself getting negative, or hear myself say something negative, I say "cancel that negative" and I feel different immediately. I gave up the things that speak negatively to me (newspapers, TV, etc.) and try to be the positive light in other people's day. I say hello to everyone, even if we are just passing in a parking lot, I always try to have a unique answer to "how are you" like "living the dream", or "absolutely marvelous", and I can see how it affects others. They are taken back and usually smile. If you need something to do that takes virtually no time at all, donate a coat. Winter is coming and many people are grateful for a coat or a blanket. Thanks Dean for being my light today.

More nuggets

Great message and reminder that what we sow is what we reap. If you sow seeds of hope and possibility thinking, you reap a harvest of hope and possibilities.

I love not only the tips on how to succeed in real estate but also the encouragement to persevere.

Thanks Dean.

Negativity

Contrarian Thinking might seem to be the right move to make where a person helps out a poor person. Your project on helping someone more negative than yourself might be more dangerous than you thought because there are a lot of senseless killings going on everyday in California. I guess the least dangerous in my opinion would be to help a fellow coworker who has life worse than myself. If I go outside that circle, anything good or bad might happen.

Nice topic Dean

Hey there, I have been quiet for a while because I was knee deep building my rental farm, and low and behold, Dean drops the 30 day to fast cash book. So of course I had to pick it up. I thank you for writing it, I think this book will personally get more people involved in real estate then the others simply because you lay it out so clearly. It is like, add eggs, add butter, add mix, stir and throw in the oven. I get the feeling that you wrote it for me, which I know countless others feel the same way. So Dean I will keep you posted with how everything goes, but thanks again, you are the peoples champion!

Wisdom of being positive:

Thank you Dean. I am convinced that we can find something positive in every day.
We live in America. We have food on our table. We have a home and pray that we can keep it in this 'mortgage crisis!'
Friends and family are enjoyable and fun. While laughter is good for the heart.
Most of us have more clothes than needed, more food in house than necessary because we plan for that 'rainy day!'
Personally, I love to worship when my 'favorite songs come on.' My heart is lifted, I feel the love and presence of 'my Heavenly Father.'
Chores finished and errands complete now a personal reward = rest, nap, reading, walking, thinking to oneself, chilling! Whatever reward you choose. Follow your dream. Pray daily and read your devotional. God loves us.
He made us in His image. He is 'our manufacturer!' Good to check the Holy Book to see if we are 'working properly!' He has the cure if we are 'out of order!' We come with a warranty and our Manufacturer is always IN. Smiling

Attitude of Gratitude

Arrowstar's picture

Just today I was reading a FB post from a friend who was complaining that she had to WAIT an hour and a half for a friend to change her oil FOR FREE.I might have been a little harsh with her, but I said that she should have had a book (like her mom and I always do) and she would not have "wasted" her waiting time. And I said, really, how could you be anything but grateful? Maybe taking the time to pray for a little patience wouldn't hurt either! ; ) In these times, I believe it is especially important to stay focused on all the things that are RIGHT with our lives, and work on the things that are not. Thanks for keeping us on the POSITIVE side!

3 things that always help with negativity

1. Use Law of Gratitude. Find at least 3 things you are grateful for (the more, the better). I recommend you do this every day, in the morning or in the evening before you go to sleep (that's when I do it). And thank for all the good things that happened that day. There always are at least a few of them, you just have to look....

2. Exercise or take a long walk. This always helps me. It just seems to burn out all the negativity. I always feel better after.

3. Meditate. You don't have to buy some fancy meditation kit or anything. You can find free meditation music online, or do it in silence. Just sit down, make yourself comfortable, close your eyes, breath deeply and silence your thoughts. You'll be amazed at how much better you will hear what God, universe, the world have to tell you once you become silent Smiling

A Few Ways to Help

Lorraine Lamour's picture

Hello Dean! (Cute, as always! Hope you know that. ( : )

As for helping…you could make the day or the week of someone in need with one small item or simple gesture.

You could contact a local shelter and ASK what they need. Some people, with winter approaching, need warm clothes, a scarf, hat, gloves, or good snow boots. You could go to Goodwill or another thrift store and save money while helping someone get a basic wardrobe together.

Some people in shelters had a bad experience with their last roommate, husband, wife, boyfriend, or girlfriend, and they may need a ride to get their belongings from the last "normal" place they lived. I was locked out illegally once myself - what a nightmare! What an abusive employer/landlord. It'll all be in my book.

Just a ride and a supportive person there to see that they get their clothes and personal items can mean the world to someone who's stuck. Take a second friend along with you and moving those last few items will go even faster. You could help them get a small storage room to keep items the shelter may not have room for.

Some people could use a ride to apply for jobs, or to get medical care. Maybe they just need a few bus passes to get around town themselves, or a pre-paid phone card, or cheap pre-paid cell phone.

You could buy lunch at an inexpensive fast food place and brighten their day. Some shelters have great food; others don't serve a lot of protein and healthy food. One good meal means a lot.

Don't assume people in shelters are drug addicts, alcoholics, or ex-convicts. Some just lost their job; some are dealing with abuse, often stemming from an abuse-riddled childhood that set them up with no accurate moral compass so they would know how to avoid abuse in a spouse or romantic partner.

You could give them a small calendar, notepad and a few pens, so they can practically plan their days and see their future. You could arrange child care or transportation so a parent can apply for a job, or work a job until they have enough income to take over that expense.

A little help goes a long way. Please let me know if any of you do this. Thanks!

Another great Blog, And I must admit I haven,t posted much lately due to the negativity That I here on this site. Well I guess it is like you said some just want to be around it. When someone has this attitude they are planing to FAIL and don.t even know it. And for me a gratitude list helps me a lot. And yes I do keep my glass half Full and yes some days I have to add a few drops to it or maybe even start my day over. Have done the soup kitchen more than once on holidays, And boy what a uplifting experience. I also like to stop my the hospital ever now and then and get some flowers and have them sent to someone that has no one and just put a card saying someone is thinking about you today. Well enough and Yes Dean I will get back to posting.

Negativity

helpme2's picture

Well it isn't hard for me to find the soup kitchen. We are doing it for ourselves. Been going to the National Guard Armory and 2 church organizations for food. Unable to do much as our electricity has been disconnected as of a couple weeks ago and running low on LP so cooking is limited, proper refrigeration isn't, no running water and staying warm is rough. BUT, I know it could be worse as some of those people in those lines have less and barely clothes on them. So I don't need to do the assignment I'm already there. So pardon me if I don't see and participate in all your stuff as I have to run this laptop off a car battery which needs frequent recharging where-ever I can get that done.

You are exactly right.

You are exactly right. Thanksgiving is coming up and I suggest people go help serve meals at their local shelter. It can be a teary eye opening experience.I go to the Nashville Rescue Mission. These people really appreciate a small act of kindness. It tends to set one's mind straight on what giving is about during the Holiday Season.

Dean,

I totally get you and I commend you for dealing with the mental walls that hold us from succeeding and serving others!

Focus on what you want and not what you don't.

Filter the crap out out of your mind and theres much more time to do good for yourself and others.

Bravo Dean Bravo on NO TV and NO media.

Keep serving us and others!

Re: When Negativity Becomes Destructive

Hi Dean thanks for this piece of advice, it is so far one of the best I have heard from you and I can relate perfectly with what you're saying. I work with cancer patients and just this afternoon I had a discussion with some of my colleagues about some very young patients who are either end-stage or have their disease spread to other organs and nothing could be done for them. Most of these people are below the age of 50 years. At the end of that discussion, the conclusion is that no matter what we think we might be going through, we ought to be grateful. You blog for me is just a confirmation that I have to count my blessings.
Thanks again.

We have to make this world more positive place

Wonderful blog.

I'm really grateful, that i have achieved what I have right now in my life, and my health and people who love me that much.

I try to spend some time with less fortunate people and that gives me a stroke of humility and appreciation for life.

You always can find something positive in every little thing and coming to this website is one of them. It reenergizes you!

Thank you, Dean for a great blog and I'm looking forward to the next week!

The truth

willowme's picture

Dean,

The truth is I am scared of the direction America and the world is going financially. I don't want to be that negative person but find myself talking to others about the current state of affairs and what is coming because I want them to be prepared as best they can.

I am also so very very grateful for all the blessings in our lives and I swear I laugh and experience moments of joy every day. Ah but they are such extremes. I try and use the fear to motivate me. I've worked a full day and here I am planning on at least two hours work for our real estate business. Intellectually I feel that both negative and positives are appropriate. But the negative seems to suck the energy and happiness out of me. I like your idea about helping someone in a worse situation. I think I will make time to spend with an older friend who is in a nursing home. I bet he would like to get out of there for an afternoon. His world has gotten so small. Perhaps I can expand that a little more this week.

And on a very positive note, two different realtors have just given us cash solds lists for two of the areas we are working in. I can't tell you how many I asked to do this. But I listened to you and didn't give up. I just kept asking. Letters going out to 50 new potential buyers for our list tomorrow! I'll have another 100 going out by Friday. One of those realtors I found by specifically following your directions in "30 Days to Real Estate Cash". Whoop Whoop!

Thanks Dean. And your video blog really moved me. I think this is the first time I have commented on one.

Thanks for the uplifting words

Sabline's picture

I look forward to your messages and this one is great. I had the opportunity this summer to meet Joel and Victoria Osteen at a book signing where they had their Night of Hope. There is such a positive energy that comes from that couple, you can't help but be positive and uplifted in their presence.

It's funny that you and Joel came into my life about the same time with similar messages, of course in different ways. I have spent three years attempting to turn things around and keep the outlook positive.

I have already statred thinking about where I will spend my time this Thanksgiving to help others. I am usually alone with my full spread of Thanksgiving dinner and see those on the news that have to reach out to others. This time I want to help and give back as much as I can. I know I am fortunate and with a few (mis)steps, I could be the one being served at the shelter.
I now try to give back as best that is allowed for me. I'm not that well off but I know I can help someone in a small way.

Thanks as always for the uplifting message and being a continued inspiration for others.

Take care

to dean.

I've noticed your theme has bit different ...to include some serious life lessons. This is so appreciated because it truly demonstrates your concern for the quality development of your followers. It's not all about the deal. By the way Joel Osteen and Anthony Robbins are a couple of my faves as well.

Interesting point of view.

There have been some tough things that have happened in my wife and my life as of late. I recently got involved with facebook and spoke to a woman that i have not seen in 30 years. She just lost her husband, mother and father in law in the last 6 months. She is battling cancer and has two teenage sons to raise. Our hearts went out to her. Long story short we had a fundraiser for her and it was succesfull. WHen i see her life i realize that all of us have problems. In helping her, we actually helped ourselves. The bible is clear. Love others as your love yourself. Simple concept, yet not always easy to follow. I enjoyed your message and i agree with you wholeheartly. Negativity is very hard to get away from. I have read your book, but this message has to be heard first before anything else can really happen. The last 6 months have really taught me that. I am from the chicago land area. SO many need help here. I am hoping to learn how to do that and do it well. Thanks again.

Yes it;s great to be alive and well, and being ready to uncover that next rock or climb to the top of the biggest tree to see where we are, to see if, we;re headed in the wright path. OK,I will close for now,and say thank you for helping me to think and grow and find that Path.......
