OfflineFirst, I'd like to know why, as a guest, I can see in the right column who's online but I can't once I sign in. An second, There are so many people online right now, Is there anyway of doing a direct chat like what they have on facebook or gmail? I see many friends on here and it's such a pain to have to PM them, then wait, they PM you,and wait... A small direct chat would be so nice!

As far as seeing who's online while NOT being logged in, and then not being able to see them while you are logged in. dunno it seems to be fine.
I think a guest should NOT be able to see who is currently logged on. That should only be visible once you have signed in...
Chat...it has been requested about 1000 times since last year. Reason for it not being part of this site is that it was decided that valuable information would NOT be shared for the whole site to benefit from. The reason for the site is for everyone to share, teach and learn together.

Sorta. But that doesn't make sense. They allow PM. How is that beneficial to all? It's about the same.
I'm not talking about a group chat like the had in AOL, but a one-on-one chat like on facebook. When you are online and they are online it allows for more rapid exchange of info than PM. I'd think that be more beneficial.
basically a instant message type thing like AIM or yahoo messanger...On facebook, they have who is online and all you have to do is click their name and instant message them...It would make things a lot easier...Lot of sites have it, and it would be alot easier than PMing and waiting and doing it that way...

The reason you can not chat is because of control. You have alot of info that comes with a price tag!

You can have a chat window sort of on the right side somewhere with messeges being shown. Also, there can be a record of the chat for the day or something, so people can go and check the history.
Since we have an option to PM, I think it's only fair to have a chat as well.
But that is just my humble opinion.

If I am signed into the site only then do I get to see who is online.
If I am on another computer (friends for eg) I do not get logged into the site automatically and until I do, I cannot see who is online.
Is this not the case for all members of the site?
This doesn't make sense to me but I think I have seen this comment somewhere else too.
Maybe you could click on the Get Support link on the tab bar (above, on the right) and ask for help on this.
It makes so much more sense that you should see who is online when you are a member and not a visitor, right?
I figured it out...it's an option thing on my acc't. When i changed my name I saw an option to check(or uncheck) to see who's online. Mine was uncheck. I still dont' know why I could see them when not logged in...who knows.
I agree with Yuri. Have a record or what about open chat? or even Specific chat times like what the do with celebs or whoever. "open chat tonight from 6-9" or whatever. Then whoever is here gets to chat and all can see. No info lost.
