You can use software if you have it. If not a cheap old school way is to get a columnar pad from Wall Mart.You may want to start with a 4 column pad.

First of all your list providor should help you with managing your list. If you buy a list are you buying a one time use or multple use. When you by the second list tell them to make sure they are all new names. Also seed the list with a couple addresses you have to confirm mailing and mail dates.

How do you define large? I have handled mailing as large as 27 Million. To track that is radically different than what is reuqired to track a few thousand.

For a few thousand just get a simple PIM (i.e. outlook) Import the entire list and then add the catagory "prospect" to each one that responds and the Catagory "Change" to each address change you get back. then if you are buying your list for one time use, then delete all the contacts that do not have a catagory entry. Anyone that contacts you is now your contact and you can mail to them as much as you want.

Keep in mind if you are running solo you may want to have the mailing house do staggard drops so that you can manage the incoming calls. If you don't answer the calls you will lose a solid 10% to 20% of the respondents.
