Indiana-Joe's Epic Adventure Journal as I continue my successful journey through the Cash Lands of eBay & Craigslist Treasures!

Real Estate is my # 1 Passion!..........
Real Estate is my Burning Desire!...........
Real Estate is in my Blood!..........
Real Estate is my Greatest Adventure!............
eBay and Craigslist provide us with another opportunity!.....

We owe Dean a tremendous amount of gratitude for what his books and programs have done for our lives. Dean provided the information and knowledge to get us on a path of success with real estate investing. He gave us that burning desire to have hope again in the American Dream and to succeed with real estate. Dean’s passion and desire to help people succeed is very contagious.

Recently, we had a great conversation with Dean about real estate investing and making a difference in our communities by helping people. We admire what Dean has done and is currently doing to help people succeed with Real Estate Investing. It is amazing how many lives Dean has helped and the ripple effect of countless lives and families that are better off today than yesterday.

We discussed with Dean how Stacey and I were having success with buying and selling other "stuff" on eBay and Craigslist and making some really good extra money for nearly the past 11 years. Our formula for success is very simple, we BUY LOCAL on Craigslist and then SELL GLOBAL on eBay.

Not only can you make money but you can also save money too! Dean was so impressed by what we were doing with eBay and Craigslist, that he suggested we share this with the DG Family!

Stacey and I are so delighted to share this information with you because it can truly make a difference in your life. I always loved business and enjoyed reading about successful entrepreneurs. How they started a business and built that business was fascinating to me. In April 1999, I heard about these “dot.com companies” called Craigslist and eBay and I wanted to find out what they were all about. I knew a friend that was running a business on the internet while I went to work each day. I would ask him when he was going to get a real job and he stated that he was making too much money from home selling Star Wars Action figures. I asked him if he was selling them at the local collectible shows and he stated: “No, I have a worldwide marketplace.” This was fascinating to me so I asked him to explain and that was my first introduction to eBay.

This was very exciting to me especially I saw the amount of business my friend was doing. I went home later that night and talked to Stacey about this “eBay thing”. Stacey and I were going to the local movie theater but before we left, I setup an account on eBay and listed a Disney Animal Kingdom backpack on an eBay auction. The backpack was still new and in great shape but was just sitting on a shelf in my closet. I bought it on sale the year prior at Disney World for only $5.00. A few hours later when I got home the price was bid up to $15.00. I could not believe how easy this was. I sold that pack back for $22.00 and this was my start on eBay. I looked to see what else I could sell and sell we did. For the past 11 years we have been selling on eBay. We have a simple system, buy Local on Craigslist and sell Global on eBay!

It is just that easy! I want to share this with all of you because I believe real estate investing is the fastest way to build wealth. In addition to real estate, you can also make some extra CASH TODAY with Craigslist and eBay. If you need a few extra bucks today, eBay and Craigslist can give you an extra $100 per week or even a few thousand a month!

Why I want to share this with you is because I know there are so many people out there that an extra $100 a week or a few thousand a month could make all the difference in the world for you!

Over time this extra cash can add up to help you with your real estate investing or take some pressure off you today with your current bills and let you open your mind as you read Dean’s books. I know you can succeed in real estate and I know you can have success with Craigslist and eBay too! There are even real estate opportunities on Craigslist and eBay. Thus, once you get started with Craigslist and eBay you won’t stop and who knows what can happen?

I have also found the Craigslist and eBay business is so similar to real estate Investing; from building buyer's lists, to posting “bandit” signs to finding great deals! As I do things with real estate today, it reminds me of how Craigslist and eBay helped me gain confidence and come up with creative ideas. I know you can succeed with real estate investing because Dean’s books, programs and the DG website are the elements for your success.

Today, Stacey and I are active real estate investors and real estate is our #1 passion! However, we also keep up with Craigslist and eBay. Stacey has really enjoyed the business and still has so much fun today with it. Stacey believes one of the greatest advantages of the eBay and Craigslist business is you can work on this business any time of the day or night. So it is a perfect opportunity with flexible hours for anyone that has a few hours a week to make some extra "cold hard" cash.

I hope you can open your mind and free some of the “cash today” worries through an opportunity like Craigslist and eBay can provide to you. By listing some of your unwanted "stuff" you can make a little cash today which might help you make a lot of cash tomorrow with real estate! I know you can do it! Please feel free to post any eBay or Craigslist questions on this forum thread as this Epic Adventure continues to evolve! Believe and Achieve! Smiling - Joe

eBay Renews Assault on Craigslist with... Buzzwords?
BNET
By Chris Dannen
May 4, 2010

In its Sisyphean quest to undermine Craigslist, eBay (EBAY) is preparing to launch a kind of Star Wars program full of the latest buzzwords: augmented reality, hyperlocal ads, Twitter integration and mobile payments. But the plan has essential flaws: it doesn’t mitigate — or even address — Craigslist’s biggest advantage.

Ebay’s trouble with classifieds hasn’t always been rooted in incompetence. It runs seven successful classifieds sites worldwide totaling over 80 million monthly visitors, including popular marketplaces like Gumtree, Kijiji, and Marktplaats. It’s only in the U.S. that eBay struggles to get classifieds off the ground: eBay Classifieds pulls in a 3.9 million uniques per month, while Craigslist sees over 50 million.

The reason is simple: most of Craigslist’s revenue comes from job ads, adult services ads and New York real estate listings, enabling the remainder of Craisglist’s services — like the “for sale” section that eBay would be most comfortable rivaling — to be available to users for free. Ebay can’t compete with free services (and its principals can’t seem to kill Craigslist from the inside, either). So the site has opted for another strategy: throw money at fatuous technological solutions.

According to PCMag, eBay Classifieds is working on several. The first is an augmented reality app for smartphones that can show users stuff for sale nearby. (If you’ve never seen an augmented reality app, it looks basically like Terminator vision, overlaying information on your phone’s camera view.) Of course, this initiative ignores the fact that augmented reality apps are really only useful for a spur-of-the-moment search for something walkable: a Starbucks (SBUX) or a subway station, for example. A couch? Used car? No.

Ebay is also reportedly working on integration with PayPal’s new mobile payments initiative, which involves nifty software like an iPhone app that lets you bump phones to exchange money. Ebay’s masterminds only got this stop-gap half right: yes, mobile payments are expected to become ubiquitous over the next four years. But classifieds buyers are not going to be eager to involve PayPal’s fee structure (which can levy a charge of up to 3% of the total amount) in big purchases like used furniture, appliances and collectibles. In classifieds, cash will remain king. If a seller or a buyer wants to use credit card or PayPal that badly, they’ll use regular old eBay.com, and opt for local pickup. Why should eBay push a duplicate service?

Another plan of eBay’s is to add location awareness to its listings, so that users can see hyperlocal listings by neighborhood. But this is a little bit like using scissors to cut the lawn; that level of precision is overkill. Craigslist does very well by splitting popular zones like the New York metropolitan area and the Bay Area, for example, into its constituent parts: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Westchester, and so on. Whether an item is 1.2 miles away or 3.4 miles away is immaterial; with classifieds, it’s the deal that’s the draw.

PCMag says eBay is also experimenting with the orchestration of social selling, or sales between friends, by integrating with Twitter and other services. That’s a worthwhile avenue, but it’s hard to envision how eBay can add any value here. Beyond publishing a Facebook status update or a tweet to all our friends — “Apartment for Rent” — how much more work can our Web tools really do?

Craigslist endures serious costs for its business model; just this week it was subpoenaed by the Connecticut Attorney General for its sex ads and excoriated by at least one non-profit for enabling human trafficking. Ebay apparently thinks it needs to achieve sacrificial parity by blowing millions of dollars to compete, but it doesn’t have to. Instead of throwing capital at overwrought technological solutions, eBay should keep it simple: make classifieds free in the United States and find another way to monetize them, just as Craigslist does. Ebay’s auction site could be on the brink of a real recovery, and has already supplanted classified ads in much of the country. It should put its resources into what it does best and leave Craigslist to its niche.

Sorry for my delayed response, I've been gathering more items to sell and am so-o-o excited to get started. I've been watching for when's the best time to sell what and what people are buying. It's amazing the items I've passed up at sales not knowing that I'd just missed a possible $50 to $150 profit!!

If I may share some things I've recently learned: maternity clothes lots, old watches/parts-lots of 3-5, & costume jewelry/parts-large lots, coins-newer and older, ocean stuff, sponge-bob anything, "Everything's $1-store"-for new finds; and the fun thing for me is I know of a St.VDP store that sells clothes by the bag/$3 mostly (and if you fold in half & roll tightly you can get tons more in a bag), and jewelry for change. I've found 14K gold/onyx earrings for 50 cents, heavy wt .999 chain set for $2; garage/estate sales are fun too but lately not as cheap as some St. V's or Goodwill's can be. Check around, some people who tend those stores either don't know what's there or don't care, & either way I don't feel guilty since all of their profit is donations-and lots of them. I've even found CA$H & other great stuff in pockets/purses so check them too!

Joe, do you mean international paperwork at the post office, eBay-? Also, do you have problems with unacceptable items overseas due to their country's environmental laws? I just finished a science class on human ecology and learned that some items sit in overseas customs holdings for years due to plastic content or the like, so I'm a bit wary of problems like that costing me rating or other financial problems.

Thanks so much again neighbor, for your advice and for sharing ~ & GAME ON! ~ C in Ky

OurSweetSuccess,

.....Thanks for stopping by the journal and sharing your success with others. It sounds like you are doing great. The key with shipping internationally is to undertsand the paperwork you need to compelte at the post office as well as what you can ship. Each country may be a little different so the more you undertstand about each country the more issues you might avoid. I usually sell clothing, such as Disney World merchandise, to several different ebayers in various countrys. There always seem to be Disney fans around the world. I have not epxerieneced an issue yet with unacceptable items, but this does seem like an area to confirm what you migfht be able to ship and where. Good luck and continued success with your internet business! Believe and Achieve! Smiling - Joe

Amazing book Joe

I just finished reading your book on-line a few minutes ago, It was full of soo much great information on both CL and eB that I have started going through my list and taking pics. of my first items. Getting the right picture. I am very excited by the prospect of making money so easily and without leaving home to do it. Your knowledge and writing in your book Joe is precise and to the point of how exactly to use these sites together. I wish learning how to do REI was more to the point in giving directions as I need. I am going to your RE Journal for help, I hope that is as informational as your book, then I also will be on my way to making money everywhere. You are awesome and I will be asking you for tips on how to wholesale RE, I hope that is ok with you. Great Luck with your book, but I don't think you need it!
Thank you,

A Big Thank-you!

Joe,
Thank-you so much for taking time to put your thoughts down on paper to give everyone a new stream of income. It was very informative.
I do believe that when an person starts their journey to become financially free they are motivated to learn and to be educated about what others have been doing to get where they are today.
But I have to tell you that I have used both CL and Ebay and it has been very lucrative for myself and my spouse. I was telling my husband some of the different ideas that you had and he was fired up once again. This comes at a good time for him since he has become totally disabled and he feels now he is more computer savvy so he can implement some ideas of yours and start doing this again. I usually have been the one to handle everything in regards to a computer but this was great to see this has given him great ideas to work with. He even got the digital out and started taking pics. Great to see him feeling good about himself.
That is why a "BIG" Thank-you for letting us in on all you do with all your streams of income. You are an inspiration!!
May God Bless you and your family!
Laura

Laura,

Thanks you so much for the nice comments about my book, I really appreciate you taking the time to read it and offer input. I am so glad to hear it inspired your husband to take action and get fired up again. A business is always so much fun when you can work as a team and share in the excitement an internet business has to offer. I always enjoy sending the items to the buyers as well, because when I package their items it is almost like wrapping a gift because of the excitement most buyers have when they receive their items. I wish you and your husband tremendous and continued success in all you do! I am so happy that you found the book helpful. Buy Local and Sell Global! Believe and Achieve! Smiling - Joe

"From the very beginning, I was involved in talking to people, listening to people. And it hasn't stopped. The idea was that people send me information; I'd ask them about it, listen, try to do something about it - and then ask for more feedback." ~ Craig Newmark (founder of Craigslist)

05-13-2010 Thursday

....The weeekend is almost here and so are the new garage sales. Be sure to check-out the local garage sales on Craigslist or in your local newspapers. It is also a good idea to check-out any auctions listings that could be listed as well. This is the time of year many of the government agencies may decide to clear the clutter. You never know what you may find. Another good item to look for is community garage sales. Some communities could have over 100 homes that participate.

I once purchased a laundry washer and dryer from a garage sale for only $25 for both! Can you believe it? I inquired as to why the home owner why they were selling them and they stated that they had their own but when they purchased the house, it came with a newer washer and dryer so they wanted to get their extra set out of the garage!

I could not believe it epsecially since I needed a washer and dryer. The funny thing is, you may find items that help your eBay business or you could discover items that could help your property rentals. A washer and dryer provided in a property rental should be able to get you at least an extra $25 a month in rent. That's a pretty good return on investment! Buy Local and Sell Global! Believe and Achieve! Smiling - Joe

“People were doing business with one another through the Internet already, through bulletin boards. But on the Web, we could make it interactive, we could create an auction, we could create a real marketplace. And that's really what triggered my imagination, if you will, and that's what I did.” ~ Pierre Omidyar (founder of eBay)

....Friday is upon us and the weekend is near. Be suyre to check-out yoru local listings for those garage sales. I often can even find soem great items for sale when I am just driving neighborhoods looking for properties. The great thing is to multi task when you out and about. I often find many awesome items to sell for my eBay business when I am out just shopping in my rgeular weekend routine.

It's the ability to spot an item that peole want at a great price. If the item is cheap enough there is almost no risk to "buy and try" selling the item. Over time your niche will be developed. Keep searching for those deals and they will appear! Buy Local and Sell Global for steady profits! Believe and Achieve! Smiling - Joe

"When you look at the accomplishments of accomplished people and you say, ‘Boy, that must have been really hard,’…that was probably hard. And conversely, when you look at something that looks easy, that was probably hard. And so you’re never going to know which is which until you actually go out and do it." ~ Pierre Omidyar (founder of eBay)

City auction going, going, gone online
The Review Times (Fostoria, Ohio)
By ANDREA SLIVKA, STAFF WRITER
May 13, 2010

When surfing online for the latest deals on eBay.com, area residents will soon be able to bid on the city’s old police vehicles.

The former DARE vehicle and two cruisers are among police property that will be put on the auction site in the next few weeks, according to Police Chief John McGuire.

City council authorized the administration to sell old, unneeded property last year and recently added eBay to the list of possible auction sites. Other sites authorized for use by the city are govdeals.com and craigslist.com.

While eBay had been left out as an option last year due to a concern about fees, McGuire told council in late April the fees are minimal and should not deter the city from using the site.

The online auctions are replacing the annual city auction, which ended last year.

City officials expect to attract more bidders and make more money on eBay than at the yearly auction or on government auction sites.

“Anytime you get more people involved, the return is going to be more,” McGuire said.

In the past, prospective buyers were often limited to those looking to use old vehicles for scrap, and vehicles would sell for just a few hundred dollars, he said.

But other police departments he has worked for used the popular auction Website, and he estimated the departments gained about 20 percent more for auction items by using Web site.

McGuire will put the police property up for bid once the two replacement cruisers arrive and paperwork is completed, which he anticipates will be in the next few weeks. He will issue a public notice and step-by-step instructions for bidding once the items are put up for sale. The department will also give a thorough description of the vehicles’ conditions.

In order to prepare the police vehicles for auction, the department will also remove police markers and the DARE logo .

Saftey Service Director Dennis Fligor said the city may still operate a traditional city auction if abandoned bicycles collected by police accumulate too much. Otherwise, he does not anticipate the city to hold more auctions. At this point, there is little left to sell because the city tried to clean house of spare equipment at last year’s auction.

“You don’t hold an auction when there’s minimal stuff,” he said.

......I went to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway today to watch the time trials and practice for the Indy 500 in 2 weeks. It was a lot of fun and they had tons of souveniers. From shirts to postcards, posters, etc. Some of these types of souveneirs may appeal to others on eBay such as the official 2010 Indy 500 t-shirts. I usually find when you buy a t-shirt that x-large or 2x-large are the nmoist popular sizes and usually sell the best. Therefore, you never know where or when the next deal may be rioght where you are at! Buy local and sell global for steady cash flow!

EBay going mobile with its online auctions 05-16-2010

EBay going mobile with its online auctions
By Statesman.com
May 16, 2010

Just like the Who, eBay Inc. is going mobile.

The giant online auction and shopping site has pushed hard to adapt to the explosion in smart phones and the even newer surge in tablet computers.

And the effort is paying off quickly. EBay introduced its first mobile applications in 2008, and $600 million of its sales were conducted over smart phones and other mobile devices last year. This year, it expects the total to expand to $1.5 billion.

That's still a small fraction of its nearly $60 billion in online sales last year, but the growth trend is right. And the company claims its push into mobile e-commerce is well ahead of such Web rivals as Amazon.com and Walmart.com.

The move to mobile means more potential buyers for established eBay merchants, such as Austin's Beth Van Doren, who has sold tens of thousands of dollars worth of vintage linens, such as World War II-era tablecloths, on eBay over the past several years.

Van Doren, a former buyer for such retailers as Neiman Marcus, says eBay is the perfect platform for sellers in niche categories such as hers, which she describes as "cottage chic."

She has developed a network of repeat customers from across the country who come back to her eBay store — nouveauqueen — looking for the regular additions she makes to her inventory.

Van Doren is one of more than 360,000 sellers that the company has in Texas. Since 2006, those online vendors have sold more than 72 million items on eBay and have driven more than $6 billion in sales.

Austin accounts for just over 10 percent of the state's eBay sellers with more than 7.6 million items sold for more than $600 million over the past four years.

EBay has about 200 million product listings on its site at any time. How do you fit all that into a smart phone?

Answer: With cleverness.

Steve Yankovich, eBay's vice president of mobile communications, says the trick is to get the right information to eBay members at the right time. His team has developed software that sends alerts to customers with smart phones telling them when products they are tracking are close to being sold out or whether they've been outbid at a product auction.

"The iPhone will push an alert instantly, so you are always in the game no matter where you are," Yankovich said.

The iPhone explosion fueled the company's first growth in mobile commerce, but it is getting ready for the growing number of Android phones.

And with the launch of Apple's iPad tablet device, eBay has found a new e-commerce platform.

The iPad naturally displays search results in high-resolution thumbnail images, which makes it well-suited for customers who want to quickly move through up to several hundred products for sale.

Yankovich said his company already is tracking iPad activity on its site, finding that those users generally are more active in the evening and that they tend to spend more on the site than typical users.

"The iPad with its bigger screen than a smart phone is a totally different visual and tactile product browsing experience," he said.

"The iPad is like a window-shopping experience using your hands. People love to window-shop because you get to see all the products in their best light. The experience of the iPad is a lot like that."

He expects plenty of other tablet computers to arrive on the market this year. "If they have the recipe and the experience and the form factor right, then we will be there too" with e-commerce applications for them, he said.

Analyst Charles King of Pund-IT Inc. says eBay "is at the head of the pack in mobile commerce."

King says the mobile devices are useful for both eBay sellers and buyers in tracking sales or auction bids.

"The new CEO John Donohoe recognizes the strength of the eBay brand, and in mobile he is moving that brand into a different world of connectivity and exploiting the brand for a new generation of devices," he said.

On the Plane Ride Home

Hello Joe and Stacey,

It was great hearing your stories at the EDGE 10 event. I've got your stories on my mind as I create a plan forward. I was thinking about you and Stacey on the plane ride home Sunday evening. Same as for you, the plane ride seemed so short because I was working on my plan of action. You guys hit the ground running after EDGE 2009. I want to put an offer in on a second property (I closed on one last week) as quickly as I can. I'm making a list of as many local small commercial banks as I can right now. This one is a post sheriff's sale short sale. It's just around the corner from the property we bought last week... and we like it even more!

Roger

05-29-2010 Saturday (CUBS WIN!)

....I went to the Chicago Cubs game on Saturday with fellow DGers Chip and Andrea. We had a great time as we were big Cubs fans and Chip and Andrea are St. Louis Cardinal fans. There were all kinds of goodies that could make good items for eBay sales. These items included programs, the free Wrigley Field collectible Pin give away upon entry, various other reasonable inflatable souveniers that incldued an inflatable Cubs bat for only $2. Yes, can you believe just $2! This could be a great item for those Cubs fans or pin collectors across the USA.

You never know where and when you are going to find your next deal but keep your eyes and ears open to buy local on Craigslist and sell global on eBay for future steady cash flow! Believe and Achieve! Smiling - Joe
