Sick of the SPAM!

Sick of the SPAM!

I, for one, am willing to type the little code in order to post... at least temporarily. This spamming in just nuts and annoying. Typing the code would stop the little trolls for awhile and we could again search this site without garbage in the way.

Unless someone on here needs sheepskin boots, we need something to filter this out.

Any other thoughts on this?

I have... 16 times on one thread alone.

How about people with more than 200 points no longer need to enter the code? But for new member, they enter the code to make sure they aren't spammers. Once they reach 200 points, no more codes!

That would work! Now how do you set that one up?

I'm 100% with you Sheila

spamming here is out of control! I've wasted so much time flagging them, but I've given up. I want to come here to read and post rei stuff...

Maybe new members could be required to fill out profile, etc., not just a **** name, before they can post?

Sheila you are right!!

one of my older post got scammed last night with a bunch of non sense. Yes adding the code confirmation would reduce it significantly. I guess DGadmin needs to add it as standard when posting messages.

You would deny me my boots! Ah!

But seriously they said they are working on it in one of my threads last week, so we will just have to be patient , I guess.

Thread hijacking!!!

Woke up to 15 new posts on our threads only to find spam. I was hoping to get some good info or new knowledge. Nope, boots!!!
I'm sure they'll fix it, the folks at DG.com care too much to leave us fuming. It's not just frustrating but disappointing... Thinking you have a new contribution and finding spam...

Spam

We do our best to remove all spam and we do ban accounts who violate the rules but it doesn't keep them from creating new accounts. We are currently working on adding more procedures to help elimniate spammers to post but it also makes it harder on the regular users who follow the rules and we do not want to add trouble.

Thanks everyone for your feedback and help! We will also be adding new features that will help weed these people out without affecting the community - but we will always rely on your help to flag things that slip through that don't belong.

Jeremy

Is it really that personally stressing???

Just ignore the posts and deal with the ones that matter.

Too time consuming for worry about; that's why this site has an IT and department to deal with

When your awaiting a response, it's frustrating.

When I think someone has answered a question on a thread only to find spam it burns up my time checking it.

I figure I'll post this thread and try to get results that's all. Taking action!!! Being a squeaky wheel in order to get some oil! If we don't bring our frustrations out to be addressed, then they will never get fixed. What should I do when I have an issue with someone? Wait and hope?... No! When you have a problem, you don't settle and wait, you take action!

Wow... I guess I could lay off the coffee a bit...

Thanks Elix, I'll try to relax a little.

Don't sweat the small stuff.

Just flag the item as offensive then in the comment section _junk_ nothing to do with rei and hit send. then continue on with the business at hand. That is what I do. Life is too short to get uptight over junk.

Thanks Sheila

for reminding me; I haven't gotten my coffee today

Off to McD's I go

I agree with Elix

but also noticed that they hijacked threads, so then it becomes annoying.

You have to give admin a break...

Spam is the black plague of our electronic age, and if we were even close to a cure, it'd no longer be a problem. Even the best programmers have to fight it one post at a time, or one account at a time. I think we're dealing with a "spam server" here.

What I mean is: not just one guy posting spam one at a time, I mean a SERVER (network hub), a computer or multi-computer dedicated to flooding its targets with multiple fake accounts, each with multiple spam posts, all at once. When something like THAT starts attacking a site like this, it's not like a rifle or shotgun attack - it's like having 50 or 5,000 little Manchurian Candidates who all wake up and attack simultaneously with one keystroke.

I've already suggested the best solution I know of: Track this guy back to his IP address and block it permanently. But whoever's doing it, if he can afford a server to spam this site, he can probably blur or change his IP address.

I said it before and I'll say it again: "What do you mean 'ugh'?!! I DON'T LIKE SPAM!!!" - Monty Python. Laughing out loud

Shelia, I really think

Shelia, I really think that's a good idea to have a certain amount points and not having to put in the captcha code. That makes a whole lot of sense!

Spammers

I've flagged so much spam here I'm probably eligible for a Boy Scout badge. Sticking out tongue

It's not necessarily a server doing the spam.
If you have your browser set-up in a certain way it's ridiculously easy to spam a site like this. (no I don't spam but the way to post on dg.com is one of the easiest I've ever seen)
Other sites require real names and email addresses to register among other things.

I do see the argument from both sides. It's easy to pass over the new spam threads that are created. But like Shelia said, when you're following a topic or waiting for replies only to find dreck instead it burns you up. Especially if a particular thread has multiple pages and you have to surf you way to the last pages.

Shelia's idea of having some posts under your belt before deactivating the capcha is a great idea. Most of us that are regular contributors really wouldn't have to worry about anything anyways as we would already qualify.

One way we can look at this is with them building a new spam filter from the ground up, they are getting their hands full of rules and filters to apply.

Hey admin, can we delete blogs and bios yet?
