OfflineI don't know about the rest of ya'll but I am the kind of person who rarely ever gives up easily. When I make up my mind to do something I pour my whole self into it. Road blocks can get in my path and if I can't figure out how to work with the problem, can't go around it I will climb over it, dive under it or knock it down take it out completely!
After bringing our computer back from the blue screen of death and letting out a scream of frustration that all my research, ads and a good part of my notes are all GONE. Then facing the pathetic ugly truth of our money situation, I sat down and bawled my eyes out. I then gave way to a wave of depression and walked around here like a zombie for a few weeks.
All I could think was,'I can't do this I just can't! the money isn't just tight there isn't any! We need to take care of this and we need this stuff soooo desperately! Everyone is right this is a pipe dream and I am wasting time chasing it.'
After filling out some more applications and getting, 'your too educated, were under a hiring freeze, you have been out of the work force for too long.' bla bla bla bla AHHHHHHH!!!!
I got good and angry. I don't want to work at those places any how I want to build my own REI business it just seems so impossible!
So I called my best friend in Oklahoma and totally unloaded all my problems, hopes, fears and after a good amount of bawling she said, 'You are the strongest, smartest most capable and determined woman I know. If there is a way you will find it.'
A few days later my mom stopped in for a visit and the end result of that conversation prompted me to say what I am always telling my children, 'you will never know unless you try.' All I can see in our future is more and more debt getting worse and worse with no light at the end of the tunnel. Why not buy a flash light? So I did! I joined the Success Academy!!!!
Now I am working on finding other REIers and networking with them to get some cash flow going here! There don't seem to be any close to me but I don't see that as a problem its a challenge!
Come hell or high water or in the current case several blizzards I WILL SUCCEED AS AN REAL ESTATE INVESTOR!!!

I like your guttsy attitude and determination. With a combination like that you are sure to succeed.
Back in the day they called it The Mentor Program, and like you I didn't have much money at all. But I did join and started studying like my life depended on it. Every night 2 to 4 hours a night, 7 days a week. You will find that your knowledge of RE will go full speed ahead and everything that you had questions about will all become much clearer. To coin a phrases, You will GAIN THE EDGE needed to succeed in this wacky business.
You made the right choice, now go put your newly found knowledge to work. Much success to you, I know you will be on your way to a better life very soon....Jan

Congratulations on making a HUGE change for the positive!! I am so glad you didn't cave under the frustration of your situation. A month from now you will be able to look back and know that all those glitches were actually a blessing in disguise. Use that emotion and energy to propel yourself forward. And take every advantage the Success Academy offers!! You deserve it! I can feel in your post the determination, and that you are set strong in your mind that you WILL make REI work for you. (I know the exact feeling. NOTHING was going to stop me when I started!) And you now have all the tools in your hand. Again, CONGRATS!!! you have made a wise choice.

Can I ask how you joined if you didn't have the money? If I am prying, then I apologize. I am considering it myself but funds are so tight now and I am actually not working. I completed my taxes and am using the refund to try and get into my first property, but after that there's nothing, nada, zippo, zilch...
No I don't mind, in fact I am sure it will be a big part of my success story. I took the very last bit of money we had and paid for the success academy. When I say the last I mean the very last dollar. I then went to churches for food and shoveling snow for some cash.

I was under the impression that this was a down market and that sellers were abundant. It was just a matter of appling the necessary steps to achieve success. In other words, other investors were failing because they were doing the wrong things. But now I'm reading that in order to see positive results I should think about the coaching program.
Can anyone shed light on this issue. Is it really that hard to succeed on your own?
This is definitely a golden market for investors. You surely can succeed with what Dean provides in his books and here on the site. But sometimes we can be hesitant to take action even with all the tools and information. And sometimes the info can be overwhelming. (For me, it was more fear in the beginning). This is where it is so beneficial to be a part of the Success Academy. You have knowledgeable, active investors as instructors, there at your fingertips, a phonecall away at the advisory line when you have questions. You have a curriculum that teaches you step-by-step and takes you through the actions until you actually DO your deal, along with videos and tele-classes. (There is some phenomenal help on this site, too, but it is all volunteer, so answers are limited to when those that can help have time to answer.) All in all, for those that choose the academy, it does give a leg up on getting started and someone to hold your hand. But you most definitely do not NEED to join to succeed (as we have seen with so many student success stories).

Girl, you sound like me. I recently joined and took the last few coins I had. I am studying like crazy. It seems like I can't get enough, I am on the computer even at work, sneaking around trying to not let people know what I am doing, they are the naysayers. I'm going to fire my boss in 2011, you can bet your a...... on that one! Whew! I don't have my Power Team yet, but girl, I am up and running. This is my third week in the program and I'm pumped. Today is my 4th day in the Academy and I am lovein it! I am starting to see the fuller/bigger picture of everything and I'm just about ready to start making some phone calls.
I cannot locate any REI clubs close to me, the closest is 2 hours away and I am unable to get there. However, I am going to call them anyhow, in fact I'm gonna call and/or email every one of them. I have a few other Ideas in the making for finding my team QUICKLY but I need to learn a bit more first.
My goal is to have the first deal in the works by no later than March 26th. Lots of learning to do while doing that... Whew! I love it though and I have developed a way to do it that is really working for me and THAT is probably what I am enjoying about this program more than anything, and that is, this program truly is designed for ANY individual to learn at their own pace in their own way. It is so user friendly I think my mother could figure it out!! If you only know how terribly technologically challenged she is you would understand. I mean she had her computer for 5 whole years and she didn't know how to search using Google! Come On!
On another experience and slightly spiritual one; I am always saying things happen for a reason and our choices affect those things largely. I am referring to my snow shoveling experience here.
Had I not joined the Academy I never would have went door-to-door snow shoveling and I never would have learned the lesion that assessing the job before making an offer is CRUCIAL!
OMG that first job was a KILLER! We bid $25.00 and as it turns out the driveway which we couldn't really see clearly at first because the snow was so high was ENORMOUS!!!!! Then its two old people on oxygen and stuff so we wanted to do a really good job for em. Oh shoot my body STILL aches! LOL!!!
Once done we did 4 jobs and made $110.00 Had we really assessed that first place better we would have made $135.00 to $150.00. Well lesson learned but the really cool part is since we did it together, my boyfriend and I, it was pure profit. Oh, and we didn't have no fancy diggin machine either, we did it the old fashioned way with nothing more than a couple of good snow shovels and will power.
Since its my birthday today, my best friends tomorrow and my boyfriends Sunday along with it being Valentine weekend we are taking the weekend off but I know we wont be able to resist using the program.
