Congratulations! I think you are the first DG member to actually have the police call on a bandit sign!

Where exactly did you put your signs? as far as the ROW; keep your signs off State/City property and you should be ok; put them in the Walmart parking lot, or by the McDonald's drive-through ...

We cant do that in our town either. Every town has roads coming into it. Go about a mile outside city limits and put them out in both directions. Ex: 10 roads coming into town = 20 signs. Put them in neighboring towns also. Staple them up on light poles if you can't put them in the ground. We ended up using flyers and business cards. Put them everywhere that will let you, laundry mats, Resturants, smoke shops, libraries,etc. Leave your card in the credit card slots at gas stations, ATMs, etc. Don't litter but leave them laying around anywhere that someone will see it. You don't have to put your name on it if you don't want to, just your 800 number or email and you will still get results.

Get a untraceble phone number to use on the sign, I use magic jack number for my sign, another thing put signs at intersections where the traffic has to come to a complete stop, off ramps from the interstate works great also, around wmarts, mcdonlds, walgreens etc, high traffic areas 18 x 24 yellow hand writen with black sharpie pen...action+knowledge=success....

In my hometown is illegal to place bandit signs, but you can use numbers that are not traceable like Google Voice, Magic Jack. You can also set your signs on Friday after 5pm and pick them up on Sunday evening, this way the police or city will not remove them.

thanks everyone for your replies. I put one on each side of Wal Mart. One was on a street right of way, the other I thought was on Wal Mart property but I guess not. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll use them.

You could also use more flyers and such to spread your message. Where there is a will there is a way. Good Luck!!

I don't know of a city or town anywhere in the USA where bandit signs are legal. Doesn't stop me from putting out 15 to 20 a week. I put them out every Friday night starting around 6:30 PM. I've been called by city workers (never the police!) two times and told to take down my signs, never did however. The deals I have gotten from my signs would more than pay for any fines IF I were to ever get any. I have yet to see the headline "Man gets year in prison for bandit sign caper"!

I use my personal cell phone number, I am not afraid of the sign police and would rather talk directly to my sellers when they call off my bandit signs. I don't want my sellers calling into a pre recorded message. I know I hang up when I get one and so do a large percentage of sellers. I always said if I get so busy that I need to screen my callers I will hire a phone service. What if you screen some one that sounds like a loser but they have several friends that are not. No prescreening will allow you to determine that! A lot of avoidance goes into having a pre recorded message I think.

To each their own, but I prefer for my sellers to talk with a human the first time they call, not some pre recorded script.

I was fearful myself of the Bandit Sign Police so I placed my signs at exits to the local supermarkets and Walmart instead of on public right-of-ways. The walmart security guard gave me a hard time so I placed my signs on the side street leading to the parking lot close to the stop signs. On the opposite side of their lot, there was another parking lot to a strip mall across the street so I made my sign a little bit larger and stuck it in their grass facing the exits of Walmart. IT GOT SEEN because I got calls from it.
As for the markets, I placed signs by the stop signs as well. When there was no place by the stop sign, I again put it across the street facing the exit.

One suggestion, place your signs at an area where the driver does not block traffic should he stop to write down your number. The last thing you need is someone having an accident because they were trying to write down your number.

As mentioned before, get an untraceable number, put your signs out Fri after 6pm and pick them up Sun after dark. If you still get police calls, switch to other methods like flyers and any company that delivers to homes.

Thanks everyone. Michael, I hope you're right that no one gets a year in prison for 'outlawed bandit signs'. I'm not giving up. I'll find a way to get my message out. Everyone's advice is greatly appreciated.

Did you use your personal phone number? If so, you should use a google voice number or one where they can't trace it back to you. And, it's best to post them up on the weekend. Friday evening and take them down on Sunday.
