I wanted this year to be extra special for my Mom. Even though she never understood money (and still doesn't) she always told me I was a winner. She told me I could do anything I wanted. She told me nothing could stop me if I worked hard enough. She told me to never give up. Even though she was always filled with self doubt about her life, she thought I was unstoppable.
2 Fathers Days ago I retired my Dad. I was tired of watching him beat himself up at the machine shop where I used to work. He lived in extreme pain every single day. He has had a tough life. 2 knee replacements, quadruple by pass heart surgery, a heart attack, super dangerous back surgery, broken leg, elbow surgery, knocked unconsious, hospital emergency trips, etc. (by the way my Dad never had health insurance and he never once said "the government should provide it for me"). But the biggest reason I wanted to retire my Dad was because he said it would never be possible for him to retire. He always said he would work until he was dead. I wanted to prove him wrong. And I did.
So I called my Mom 2 weeks before Christmas and asked her how much money she made at her job. She asked me why do I need to know that. I said just tell me. So she told me and I said, "I will double your salary if you quit your job." She couldn't believe it. She has wanted to leave her job for years. She just couldn't afford it. But I can. It took her 2 days to stop crying. The stress removed from her has been amazing. Her last day was December 23rd. She is 61 years old and life is about to begin:)
When I got into real estate I knew someday I could get them their freedom. Even though they had given up on themselves years ago I knew it would be possible.
The Bible says a good man takes care of the generation before them and 2 generations after them. I'm 36 years old and I have already done both. I don't have kids but my grandkids are already taken care by what I have put in place. Hundreds of rental properties will do that.
The next time you think that real estate is too hard or you don't have time remember you are being selfish. Think of the joy you can bring to the generations you may not even know yet. Think of all the people you could help because you have been given this gift of knowledge about how to create money from nothing.
It's worth it.
Matt
You've got to find your obstacles and call them out! Unsheath the sword, and do battle with whatever it is that holds you back!
You are a very good son. God has blessed you with your parents and now you're blessing and honoring them.
I don't know how I missed this post until now. I want you to know that I am very proud of you even though I have never met you in person. You are a wonderful person and I know your parents are very proud of you to say the least.
You know, after the Great Depression of 1929 it took about 20 years for things to turn around and get better. It was a struggle much like now and the times we live in. I am 63 the opposite of you being 36 and your mom only 2 years behind me. From what I can gleen and understand from all your posts, your parents have not had it easy at all. Yet, they did a great thing in raising you.. "Let the weak say I am strong" and all glory be to God. I am so happy for you and your parents. You are so smart and reaping all the rewards of your hardships and hard work. I have so much appreciation for what you have been able to do and for what it means to your folks.
Now Matt, you need to keep an eye on them and make sure they don't just take to the rocking chair. They need to be active and exercise their brains so that they can enjoy their remaining years. Even if you can not be with them all the time maybe you can hire some assistance and servants to help them get around and go places. Maybe even get someone to oversee the nutrition. Its all about what we put in our bodies. I have a side business YOUR BODY - its systems.
I hope you will share more in the future and let us know how the folks are doing. God love you Matt. I do.
Congrats Matt to your parents, their new life beginning, and to YOU for being able and willing to do this for them.
I'm not on this site as often as I would like to be, and just happened to catch this post on the right hand side of "what has been seen lately". I'm so glad I did.
It comes at a good time.
A very good friend of mine and I were talking the other day about our goals, motivations, etc... Since I've been at this real estate thing a couple years, and she is one of my closest friends, I guess I just assumed she knew what was at my core and how passionate I was about it. She previously got into real estate (the agent side) after I got into the investing side, and her goal was to eventually get into investing (tried to get her into Dean's books, but just not motivated enough to read it). Anyway, she is now talking about possibly going in other directions career-wise....floating around like she always has (and I used to!). And this didn't make sense to me. This previously like-minded soul was wondering again, so I delved into her motivations. And she delved into mine. Both of us equally confused about the other. She said, "So what's your big deal about real estate...you're struggling a little at the moment...why don't you just put it on a shelf and go get a part-time job or something?" WHAT?! (Alarming...I thought) She continued, "I mean, what is your real goal anyway, to be rich? Is that what you want to be? You want to be rich?" She said it with a tone as if that was all there was to it...the shallowness of "just being rich".
Sure, I like nice things. But at my core, I am doing this for my family, for my parents, and for my kids. I'm doing this to bring my husband home from traveling with work so he can spend more time with our family. I want my son and my future kids to know how to build their own business, see that I stepped out in courage to build mine, that I worked hard, and that all that property will be working for us with passive income, and my time and my immense resources will be able to do lots of good FOR THE WORLD. I don't want to just sponsor one child overseas with a little bit of $$ each month. I want to build a school. And I want to get to a level of expertise where I can teach others to fish, and create financial stability for themselves, their families, and their future generations through real estate. That will be the gift that I give. That is my goal. I will not stray from it.
But, let me tell you, that friend of mine quickly kicked my motivation into high gear. When someone challenges you to "just quit"....you suddenly realize why your passion and motivation are stronger than ever to take it to the next level. AND YOU WILL NEVER QUIT!
Thanks Matt for the constant inspiration and reminder of why we are really here, and why we are really doing what we are doing!!! The gift of giving can really be the most motivating ever!!!!

Truly a beautiful story!!! My dream in life is to retire my parents and help everyone around me in need... Thanx for more inspiration. God Bless!
Matt, Now that's what its all about, That is so awesome. I wish I would have started in R.E. sooner. I am working at being able to help my family be free. Without R.E. I could not have put my son through college, not to mention paying some very expensive medical bills over the last 2 years. That is such a great feeling even for me to hear that someone can help their family like you did-(do). Way to go ,May this year be successful for all!
Have a great one

I have been following this thread since you first posted and just realized I had not commented yet.
I am so happy for you and know how good that makes you feel to be able to give back to your parents.
You are a good man, Matt.

WoW! This message speaks mounds Matt. God Bless your parents, who raised such a diligent and persevering child. They are truly reaping the rewards for the gift God gave them...YOU!
I feel "exactly" the same way about my parents. Although my father hasn't told me 'he plans on working until he's dead, he definitely shows it through his actions. As for my mother, she is exhausted from everyday and doesn't think retiring is an option.
I want to thank you for this message as it has truly inspired me keep pushing stronger than ever!
Awww this is so touching, what a blessing it is to be a blessing to your parents nothing like it.You are an inspiration to us all. God Bless you!
For thou, O God, has proved us thou hast tried us, as silver is tried. Thou broughtest us into the net, thou laidst affliction upon our loins. Thou has caused men to ride over our heads, we went through fire, and through water, but thou broughtest us out into a WEALTHY PLACE. Psalms 66:10-12
