I don't fit in!

I don't fit in!

I just had my performance review at work this week. My heart sank as I read the words “Doesn’t fit in with other employees.” My heart started pounding as I went through all my interactions with everyone over the past year as best as I could remember. I thought I was well liked and nobody did the job I do better according to one of the managing partners. So what was the deal? I felt like I had done something wrong and I was a failure.

I went home and told Russell about it and felt somewhat better. Over the next couple of days I couldn’t get those words “Doesn’t fit in” out of my mind. Then I thought wait a minute, that wasn’t the entire sentence. It was “Doesn’t fit in with other employees.” Well hey, that’s not a bad thing. I mean, I’m not just an employee anymore am I? I’m a real estate investor. I manage my own company while holding down a full time job.

So after thinking a little (or a lot) different I no longer fit the profile of the rank and file employee. I’m smiling now because I don’t fit it with the other employees. And it is obvious when I think that I just bought my fourth house on Tuesday. And in just over a month from now, I expect to make over a 40% return on my money.

Some other news is that I am working part time through the summer months at my day job and have hired someone to help in my home office. Oh and I just received an offer on one of my houses. This has turned out to be quite a nice week after all!

That will be their loss...you never know what you had until it's gone. I know you will reach your goals, just stay focused on them. I would love to see their faces when you tell them you're leaving. My wife went through a similiar thing where she worked and they ended up hiring 3 people to replace her. Keep the faith and good luck.

Thank you Shaun!

It will be thier loss but I won't even see thier faces when I leave, because I won't be giving any notice. There one day, gone the next. Eye-wink
You can't treat me like crap and get away scot free.

So many

...have given up their right to be the captain of their own destiny. I would not leave with any hostility. Best not to burn bridges and always best to be the better person. I will always do my best for my employer until the day I leave. They did me a great service by hiring me and allowing me to pay my bills until the day that I "woke up" and decided to change my life and leave the "rat race".

Each day you are gifted with 24 hours. It is your choice how you will spend your gift or waste it.

Wishing you success and happiness!

I understand how you feel however Willow has a good point. Once you give your notice you will get to see them scrambling (and possibly a bit of panic too) as they try to figure out what they'll do next without you. If you take Willow's suggestion this will make them realize that you are a bigger person than them and they will be humbled. They may try to pursuade you to change your mind too.

The goal

...for us right now is to keep evolving, learning and growing. Where we once fit in, if we continued as we should, we no longer do. And if we keep learning and TAKE ACTION we will surprise everyone with our ability to succeed.

I remember 10 years ago I found a book about finances at a garage sale. I thought I was being over the top when I looked at the owners eyes and stated that my goal was to earn one hundred thousand dollars. That seemed like a huge amount of money and a lofty goal. He said "Is that all you want to make?" It was, but it isn't now.

My goal is by 2014 to have enough passive income that I can live anywhere and not have to trade my life for money. And you know what? That seems like a completely reasonable goal.

I just got it

I had no reference for the "three feet from gold" quote until now. Got a Kindle for Christmas and the first book I bought was "Think and Grow Rich". I paid 99 cents for it! It's my understanding that Edison was privy to that "secret formula". Interesting how things come full circle.

I agree

I agree with both of you, it is best not to burn bridges but nobody deserves to be treated like crap. It won't be long and you'll be able to tell them where they can go. Best of Luck and please keep us posted.

Can't do it

I do appreciate your responses, but sorry, I can't do it. I can't let them know that I am leaving. If I do the boss will tell me. "Well, you have to do what you have to do", because that's what he tells everyone. He says we are all expendable and replaceable. And then he will hire a couple of idiots and expect me to train them before I leave. Sorry, but he can train them himself.

Missy

This is not high school

its the real world

at the end of the day its about you first. If you have children they come before you but you have to also not allow others to have power over you.

Missy, I think you should actually tell your boss you're leaving; give your notice and work your final two weeks. I think you're showing more of a mature approach then just leaving. Thats a punk move. Now if he expects you to train someone, you say "thats not in my job description". At a certain point you have to stand up for what you believe in. If you can't do it at your job, how do you expect to do it in RE where its more cut throat and people can smell the blood of someone whom they can get over on.

No better time than now to grow a pair(metaphorically speaking)

Everyone else, 2011 is the Year of the Non-Whiners; no more ibtching & moaning, no more "i'm scared to pick up the phone" and "i've been researching for the last 6 monthsbut afraid to make my first move". Thats got to stop.

This is a tough business to be in; do your best to have your personal matters in order because the stress level for this can be high if you allow it. And never allow someone to demean you or have you think you're worth less than you realy are.

Good luck to all

Well put

That was very well put Elix. You can't let people run all over you just because they think they can.

Life's Lessons

If we only knew then what we knew now right? Two that come to mind are:

The way you deal with anyone on that first confrontation will set up your relationship with them for the rest of the time you know them. Always be respectful but don't let them bully you.

And this is a big one:

Do not expect other people to think or act the way you do. They don't and you will be disappointed and/or hurt if you assume that.

Watched the Johy Cash video. Great pictures. But the line is basically the same as "Another day older and deeper in debt." We have the power to change that. Nobody else. It's not magic. It is Hard work, faith, a positive attitude, and knowing that when you fall down you have to get back up again. The tools are here. Use them or get yourself back down that mine shaft.

Wendy-I agree!

I just got caught in a big layoff a few days ago, and while it's upsetting on some level, I am excited to be able to move forward with the opportunities I have been putting on the back burner for so long! I have been doing small jobs, projects, and volunteer work in addition to slaving at my job, but not the really big stuff I've been yearning to do!

People like us are dreamers and doers and it's true, we DON'T fit in because we aren't sheep that are content to follow and do whatever we are told. I am going to do everything in my power now to make sure I don't have to rely on some greedy corporation for my livelihood again!

There is nothing more demoralizing knowing you are giving 110% and it's not appreciated. It doesn't matter how good we are. Deep down, we are meant to be entrepreneurs. You go, Wendy! You are well on your way! I am still in the infancy stage of RE investing but I am determined to make it happen!

Advocate

Great analogy with the bucket of water! We can't let our egos get in the way of reality. If we aren't appreciated they didn't deserve to have us anyway. For those of us with talent, knowledge, and drive, we should be the ones to profit, not some unappreciative employer.

Wendy-you keep at it! I admire what you have accomplished already!

Wendy - Willow

Kim,

I answer to both. No worries.

Wendy is the name mom gave me. A little know fact about me is I have done a bit of dancing. My teacher asked me to pick a dance name and after thinking about it for quite a long time picked Willow. The reason: They look delicate but their roots are deep. Their leaves are such that they let the wind (adversity) flow through them. They dance with that wind instead of pushing back. That's me folks.

Kim - take this incentive and let it give you the drive needed to make real estate investing work for you. Keep that excitement going by coming here daily.

One word of advice I can offer through my experience is to pick one or two areas to concentrate on. There are so many options available just deciding what to do can be overwhelming. We have a hamburger company here that all they do is sell three different hamburgers, fries, and drinks. That's it. They are famous and by being specific, they are excellent at what they do.

Lots of opinions

At least you have a job to complain about, I can't find one and I'm not so sure I want one. I have worked a lot of jobs in my hometown and hated just about every one of them. We are living off of my husbands income but we need more money, that is why I am getting into RE. I tried to get into it years ago but there was no internet then and some of the services offered now did not exist then. I really do like the technology that allows us communication and doing research on properties. With all of this going on and your success already in RE, I would dump that job and do what I want to do. You are not the one to be worried about not fitting in, you have your own life expectations and should go with your own God given talents to make it. I really hope things have improved for you since this thread has started. I am keeping you in my prayers like I do for a lot of people on DG to prosper and make it to the goals they want to achieve. Good luck and God bless.

Couldn't have said it better Bill

Congratulations!!!

How nice it must be to be told you don't fit in with EMPLOYEES.!
I have been self employed since I was nineteen. I KNOW I don't work and play well with others. I really worried about that since I just passed my state RE exam. But the third office I walked into (first two were closed) is a very small office where I will be expected to take my brokers exam when the time comes and take over!
Could not be more perfect.
So thank heaven you don't fit in with employees 'cause you are not an employee. Soon you won't even be going to 'work' anymore 'cause you'll be too busy making money.
Happy NEW Year!

Did you go too far?! Dean.. NOOOOO!

Things are a little different in CANADA not so many REO's and what is is usually a Crack House or some other House of ill repute..But I'm still looking I have 2 re agents looking and the list of FSBO's has slowed to a trickle but your blogs continue to encourage me..So Keep it coming..Please

Willowme

I love how you figured it out, that in actual fact you are doing great! And you are!

Most likely your work performance was evaluated by the company psychologist or worse yet psychiatrist. I would NEVER listen to or take seriuosly anything a psychiatrist says. Especially if they start prescribing you medications. Those anti depression pills are deadly! (Most of the people who do these random shootings around the country are taking anti-depressives!)

Anyway, keep up the good work. I think you're really kickn' ass! And your finding your actual place in life. A real estate investor!
Congrats on all of your success!

Joyce - Keep working toward

Joyce - Keep working toward your goals. I know that if I looked at the whole picture, I got overwhelmed with what to do and where to start. The trick? Just start! Pick out a business name. Set aside a place to make your office. Call on every sign you see that says they buy or sell houses and find out what they want and how they operate. Go look at available houses. Do anything and everything but DO. You'll get there as you gain confidence and knowledge.

Dougald - You don't have to do business in Canada. There are people all over the world buying and selling real estate away from the area they live. One year ago, I bought a house in another state that I had never seen or walked through and sold it the day after I closed on it for a $15,000 profit. It took a lot of research, building a team over the phone, and taking that risk.

Michael - Just a review where one of the partners at our firm never warmed up to me. That's ok, I never liked him much either. But I was always professional and respectful. I was looking for a job that taught me about finances. And I got that. Because of what I have learned I am a different person than when I stepped through their doors 7 years ago. Now it is time to find my next set of life lessons and move to a higher lever of living.

Each journey begins with but one step...and then another.

Thank you for your words of encouragement

Right now I am working as a wholesaler, I am just starting but I am also getting a lot of buyers and I have people that are looking for properties for me. We sign a contract to keep us honest so there are no mess ups but I am hoping things will move on a little faster. I just keep working at it and hope something will happen soon. Am hoping things are going well for you as well. Keep on Keeping on!

I could have side it any better!

Growth is a wonderful thing!

I am just getting started and I see the not fitting in happening fairly quick....and you know what I really don't mind.

Congratulations on all your successes!

Denise

Denise

That's wonderful Denise.

But if I could do it over, I wouldn't be so darn cheerful about becoming independent financially. I would have kept it to myself so that I could be the one making the decision to fit in or not. It is hard for me to not wear my heart on my sleeve and tell absolutely everyone what a great opportunity there is out there. I want everyone to have the same chance of financial freedom.

The employer though, would prefer that their employees that that THEY were the best option out there. Again I have to remember that everyone does not think as I do and never will.

Today is going to be a GREAT day!
