I don't fit in!

I don't fit in!

I just had my performance review at work this week. My heart sank as I read the words “Doesn’t fit in with other employees.” My heart started pounding as I went through all my interactions with everyone over the past year as best as I could remember. I thought I was well liked and nobody did the job I do better according to one of the managing partners. So what was the deal? I felt like I had done something wrong and I was a failure.

I went home and told Russell about it and felt somewhat better. Over the next couple of days I couldn’t get those words “Doesn’t fit in” out of my mind. Then I thought wait a minute, that wasn’t the entire sentence. It was “Doesn’t fit in with other employees.” Well hey, that’s not a bad thing. I mean, I’m not just an employee anymore am I? I’m a real estate investor. I manage my own company while holding down a full time job.

So after thinking a little (or a lot) different I no longer fit the profile of the rank and file employee. I’m smiling now because I don’t fit it with the other employees. And it is obvious when I think that I just bought my fourth house on Tuesday. And in just over a month from now, I expect to make over a 40% return on my money.

Some other news is that I am working part time through the summer months at my day job and have hired someone to help in my home office. Oh and I just received an offer on one of my houses. This has turned out to be quite a nice week after all!

Wendy they're right

just make it work out to your advantage cuz us DGers aren't like everyone else. now its time to push even harder cuz those words are stuck in your head. congrats on your success so far im sure your performance review is a blessing in disguise. Not to far from you use to work off Palomar Airport myself.

Have a good weekend and God Bless, Ron

smile

I like the way you think Erik!

I remember hearing my sister say after losing a job that she was too old and too fat to be hired by anyone. I knew at that moment that I would create a life where that wasn't going to be me.

I'm still working and it seems that most are more than happy with my work. They agreed to let me work 3 days a week for the summer months. It's a good transition for me. Just one good house deal will cover what I make normally in a year! So my goal is to work really really hard for a while so that I can enjoy my later years without the fears that unfortunately many seniors will face.

Willow,

Well, I guess your "employer" is right. You don't fit in with other employees because of all you've accomplished. It's a compliment that they see the change in you. ONWARD!!

Great job!

Congratulations on your success! I am feeling the same at my job but i have only bought 1 house. When i get to a point where you're now, i will not have the job i have right now.

RE: I don't fit in

I Can So Relate!!!! I have been told that several times and realized over the years that I have an entrepreneurial spirit. I remember telling my boss (when I worked outside the home) that the moral in that place was very low. I asked her to look at the employees while they walked around to doing their job, and notice that they walk with their head down. I suggested a change that I thought would benefit everyone and was told that she (the mgr) had been at that location for 20 yrs and it's always been that way and it's going to stay that way. I told her "Change is Good!" She didn't not agree. All this to say that I've struggled doing things the same way if it's not working for everyone. Needless to say, I was told somewhat similar to what you were told. Thinking outside the box is a good thing and never change that part of you for anyone. God gave you your abilities and characteristics and wired you for something that you were designed to do. Don't change it, be more of who you were meant to be. Isn't that awesome? We are all wired differently!

Wendy,

....You are very smart to be doing what your doing with real estate investing. I have seen too often where employers give lower than normal performance scores just so they can justify no or low raises for the year.

That was the biggest incentive that drove me to Dean's books and programs because I realized if I worked hard for me, the sky was the limit! There is nothing worse than working 150% meeting and exceeding all goals and getting a 1% raise. In corporate America you may not always be rewarded for working hard and producing results. You are at the risk of upper management. With real estate investing, the opportunities are endless!

I always say to have a Plan B. Real Estate makes a great Plan B that can become your Plan A! Often corporate employers do not like when you do not need or depend on them 100% and may have other options. Keep up the good work with real estate and one day you may hire the accounting firm you work for! Smiling Believe and Achieve! Smiling - Joe

Growth

I think of it more as a natural process of growth. As I reach outward I see more, I feel more, I am more.

For all the new investors out there it really does start with a change of perspective. My partner and I told the people we met that we were real estate investors. At first I felt like an impostor. But meeting and talking to realtors, looking at houses, getting to know the market, reading, meeting with other investors and yes, telling more and more people that "I am a real estate investor" gave the dream/desire substance.

Many are like the fish in a tank. They never grow bigger than their environment allows. I am like the crab. (smile) When my environment gets too small, I change it.

Greetings to all those other "crabs" out there.

Willow,

Great post and good for you. You are taking control of 'your' life and not letting an employer dictate what your life and future will hold. Thanks for sharing your story.

Hi Willow

Am struggling with that one as well. I want to do only real estate so I will need to have the deals coming in or I may have to slide back into the rat race perish the thought. Just as Indiana-Joe mentioned, I remember going above and beyond the whole year and was still miserable for 3 months waiting for my feedback. I got the high marks I had hoped for but my #1 least favorite thing in corporate America has always and will always be - Performance Appraisals. Its just totally out of your hands.... even if everything is done right.

Roger that

I realy like the name of your company Roger. It really caught my eye.

Growth is out and out painful sometimes. Even when it isn't it takes effort. When I first started I would go out looking at properties on my way to work, do research and make calls at lunch, and have a meeting or look at more houses after work. I felt like I was buring the candle at both ends and I was going to snuff myself out. I pulled back for a while to catch my breath. But then I got back at it again. All the work is cumulitive. It adds up and builds upon itself.

My fiance lost his job due to the company closing and had to take a part time job for a lot less pay. He was offered two jobs. One payed a little more. We discussed it and decided on the lower paying job because it would benefit our real estate business more. This is sweet: He works for Home Depot. He meets people fixing up their homes to sell, contractors, investors working on their properties, and every type of team member an investor could hope for.

Hang in there and keep plugging away. When possible remember "multiple income streams".

Thank you all for the feedback. It only makes me want to work harder and contribute to this awesome group more.

Words To The Wise

To every action, there is an equal or opposite reaction. Words are just words, shake them off. It is over and done, on to the next house - fitting right in. Congratulation on your accomplishments and many more successes in the future. God Bless.

blessing in disguise

You don't fit in because you should'nt be an employee. You should be your own boss as a re investor. Just keep doing what you are doing. Congrats on your 4th house!!!

We are the minority

It's sad how some people will try to punish you if you try to look out for your economy. They claim how they admire your work and how much of a valuable asset you are to the company but when it is time to pay like they weigh they come up with all kinds of excuses to give you the minimum raise or nothing at all. At my place of employment they even changed the performance evaluation system and management decided not to tell us until the day that we were going to get our evaluations. Previously it was 0 cents for below expectations, 40 cents for meets expectations and 60 cents for exceeding expectations. I've been getting 60 cents on all 3 of my evals. They even suggested that I get in the management program (I declined because the way they treat some of the employees goes against my morals) It came time for my 4th eval and management(the day of my eval) finally decides to inform me that the system has changed, 0 cents for below expectations, 40 cents for meets expectations, 50 cents for exceeds expectations and 60 cents for role model. I was informed about the NEW role model category the day of my eval. This year it's 50 cents for exceeds instead of 60 cents for exceeds (I felt like they were trying to take 10 cents away from me) So they tried to give me 50 cents for exceeds and I told them I wasn't signing my evaluation because I wasn't informed of the new changes that they have made to the evaluation system and it takes 10 cents per hour out of my pocket while my health care increased. I told them I haven't been late for work, I haven't missed a day, I train "managers" how to use the inventory system, provide excellent customer service and I go above and beyond my call of duty, so why shouldn't I be a role model? The store manager tells me role models are perfect I told him I strongly disagree (in my irate voice) I told him if he doesn't fix my evaluation (give me what I've earned) I will call home office and tell them how the management team failed to tell the employees that the evaluation system has changed. You bet they corrected it quick fast and in a hurry. They may not like me but they damn sure respect me.

Remember "When Faced With Naysayers"

I do believe

A am only more driven after this experience. Others can only hold my future in their hands if I let them. It is a reminder, a wake up call. My future is up to me.

Willow.......THEY DON'T FIT IN WITH YOU!!!!

I just had to comment. They don't fit in with YOU! YOU have bigger dreams and goals. YOU want to be in control of your future. YOU don't have to work for THEIR company the rest of your life. YOU are a proven "Go Getter". Knowledge is power and you know things THEY don't know. I have been through a similiar experience long ago. HOW DARE THEY TELL YOU THAT! DO not let coporate america steal your dreams from you. YOU don't have to conform to anybody's way of life. I am proud of you and all of your actions to leap forward in your investing career! This type of thing just gets under my skin.
Keep moving forward and know YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORK FOR SOMEONE ELSE FOR OTHER PEOPLE TO SEE YOU AS SUCCESSFULL. Happy RE investing.

It's not easy being green

Thank you ST's Finest. Nobody can steel our dreams unless we let them. I know how comments like "you don't fit in", "What are you nuts investing in real estate now?", "If it were so easy everyone would be doing it", etc etc can affect even the strongest of us.

The difference between people who fail and people who succeed is that one sees walls and the other sees obstacles to overcome. Being passionate and organized is good too.

Fitting In

Sac-Towns Finest hit the nail right on the head. You have advanced beyond their rat race life and can sort of look down on them from your better viewpoint of the world. Not saying you are better than them (but probably are) but you see things from the entrepreneurial spirit and see above and beyond the 9-5 workday. Keep working it and soon you will be saying goodbye while handing out business cards as you go!

Kristin

Don't Fit In???

Treat your friends like family and treat your family like friends. When placed into action, you will receive great results in Real Estate or in any ohter profession.

Congrats!

F@#$ them... :)

I feel your pain sir ^^... I used to be a general manager and destroyed every one else around me with my numbers, but always got told that i was to self centered or didn't work well with others.

I look at it and I think it was true because i was going over people's heads with what i was doing. This right here, real estate is going to be perfect for you, because the only one that can say you cant do it is you, but trust me come here talk to people here and you will never go down that path of feeling like saying that to your self.

I also found the idea of hanging out with people you wanna be like. Not so much role models but if you want to be great in real estate want to be strong in it then hang out with real estate people, I joined a club and my ambition has done a complete 180 !!

Hey best of luck to you man, You are part of the 1% of people in the world that think there is more then 9 to 5 every day..

Willow

I had a fine upstanding professional explain it this way; when most people leave their place of employment, they are missed about the same amount of time it takes the void to fill when you remove your hand from a bucket of water.
I would like to think I have made some fond memories with coworkers, however, that comment drives me to be even better at it every chance I get.
If we were all the same, what would make us individuals.

i will succeed

im started to read the book now, but i know if i implement the right strategies i will be a success woman and independent . i looked foward to hear from you and happy 4th of july and may GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY .i heard you was sick get well soon.

Independance Day

Yesterday was our nation's independence day. We are all working toward the day that we can celebrate out own personal independence from working to earn money for other people, from having our choices made for us by others, and by having our very own value decided by others.

This is not something that comes fast or easy. It is taking small steps, working hard and taking calculated risks.

Here's wishing you a personal independence day soon!

I have a similar situation.

I have a similar situation at my full time job. The difference with me though is that I am treated like a dog and people are allowed to call me names without even having to apologize to me.

My boss tells people that I am different than the other employees. The reason for that is because I actually go in there to work and I don't stand around socializing with all of them.

But now that I have found real estate, I hope to be out of there by the end of 2011. They won't be happy because I do a multiple of jobs in there and they will need to hire 2 people to replace me.

I really hope to reach all my goals by the end of 2011 and be in real estate full time.

Thanks for listening.

Missy

they were right

They were right, you didn't fit in you were much more than they were and it's a good thing they didn't hold you back anymore. Congrats and keep it up

Good for you!

That's the spirit blakesgifts! Keep your eye on the prize! Just by you going there to work, and not standing around socializing with all of them, shows focus (a major quality needed to make it in this or any other business)! Stay focused!
