A few days ago, I was leaving Florida, and I decided to write a letter to myself. I needed to express on paper how I was feeling, where I wanted to go in life, and what my goals were for the new year. I have decided to share that letter on this site, although, I won't be including my personal goals. I mailed the letter and I knew I would get it in a few days. I would recommend you write yourself a letter as well. It is amazingly powerful. Sometimes the truth hurts...
Matt,
I am writing this letter as a wake up call. There is a lot of work to be done in 2010. 2009 was a good year for you. You seemed to accomplish a lot in the first 9 months of the year. I know you had a pretty tough 3 months during June, July and August. You got knocked on your butt, ganged up on, and got the snot beat out of you. I am proud of you for getting back up. Most wouldn't have. I am dissapointed with what you accomplished in October, November, and December. And yes I know you made more money in those months than you ever had blah, blah, blah. Honestly, I'm tired of hearing that. The point is this, you could have done more. Life for you has gotten pretty easy. Your lazy and unproductive. Your stupid with your money and it's going to catch up with you. You think just because life was so hard between 2005-2008 that now you can just do whatever you want. You think all your dues are paid? Their not! Quit acting so immature and get back to business. You used to read 2-3 books a week, even when you didn't have the time, or even if it meant getting only a few hours of sleep at night. Now your reading has dropped off considerably because everytime you pick up a book you think "I don't need to read this book again, I know the information already, look at me-I've already made it." Well, I have news for you, you haven't made it. Yes, your real estate skills are sharp, but some of your other skills have become dull, because of your arrogance, you don't think you need to re-sharpen. Wake up! And you have gotten way out of shape. You should be embarrassed about the way you look, but you're not-which is just part of your arrogance and the fact that you are lazy and undisciplined. You need to get back on track. I have attached a separate sheet with all of your goals for 2010. And not just money goals. Who cares how much money you make if you can't get some of the other aspects of your life figured out. Remember when you used to have laser focus when you were running for your dream of freedom? Well, you are going to get that back. I have also included a daily schedule for you so you know exactly where you will be spending your time. You have too much free time and I am going to help you fill it with productive activities. Get focused!
Matt
You've got to find your obstacles and call them out! Unsheath the sword, and do battle with whatever it is that holds you back!
WoW Matt, that letter sounds just like the letter I need to write to myself.Exactly from letting myself go physically to almost everything you mentioned.I to have gotten lazy, I have plenty of extra time, I dont use it the way I should.
Thanks so much for opening my eyes, I needed this!!
Thank You Matt!!
Respectfully,
Curtis Fillers
Thanks for all of the positive comments on this post! You people are so wonderful and inspiring. When I decided to release this post I never thought it would get the attention that it did! Even Dean mentioned it in his mass email?! I write a lot of posts that I never publish because they are too personal, but I write them because there is a healing process that occurs when you put something on paper. I wear my heart on my sleeve and most of the time if I need to say something I say it. I truly do like to see people succeed. 2010 is going to be an awesome year. Go out there and make something happen. You only have to learn how to do one deal and then do that deal over, and over, and over, and over! Making money in real estate is only hard for a little while, once you believe, it gets really easy. It really does! Thats how a guy like me can get lazy.
Push away from the harbor! Your ship is safe in the harbor, but it wasn't made for the harbor! A good sailor is never made on calm seas! Get out on the waves!
You've got to find your obstacles and call them out! Unsheath the sword, and do battle with whatever it is that holds you back!
Thanks for the reminder about writing things down and the power behind that, I had forgotten all about that. Thanks again for your open, honest and helpful post. Since reading your 'letter to yourself' you've got me thinking and planning things in a new light both REI related and on a personal level and how I can improve both.
Take care and I wish you & everyone on this site a Happy New Year!

I really needed to hear the things written in your letter. It reminded me that I needed to re-focus on what's important. And stop bad habits (TV watching)that is taking me away from accomplishing my goals. So I am off to write my own letter to myself. Thanks, again.
dearest matt
i realize that feeling arrogant or lazy is uncomfortable(thank goodness)bcz it's not who u really r or we'd really be in trouble. so...if i could offer you this perspective:
you r love so love a little more
you r pure positve energy, so move yourself closer to that powerful place...
you know u r there when u feel passion, eagerness, love, appreciation, joy, happy anticipation, excitement, optimism, zest...
you r an uplifter @ your core so uplift
you r a player so play more
you r a laugher so laugh more
you r a soother so soothe more
you r infinite intelligence... so use the brilliance of your mind
okay now that we got that out of the way... back to 2010
a new letter to MATT...
I AM WHERE I AM AND I CAN GET TO ANYWHERE THAT I WANT TO BE FROM WHERE I AM NO MATTER WHAT AND IT'S GOING TO BE A BLAST OF FUN FEELING THE ENERGY OF LIFE FLOW THROUGH ME!
now matt, tell me like u want it to be. tell me as it's becoming. tell me as you've hoped for. tell me as you've dreamed for. tell me as it exists within u. tell me WHY u want to go there. tell me what it will be like when u get there.
TRAIN YOURSELF TO BE THERE AND LIFE WILL REFLECT IT BACK TO U. THIS IS HOW WE GET INSPIRED TO ACTION.
HERE'S TO LIVING THE DREAM,BABY!

I have thought about doing something like this too, but have not done it. The year 2009 has been the very worst year of a 5 year hell. Many times I find myself feeling overwhelmed and sorry for myself, but inevitably that is when I find someone suffering much more or has lost much more than me. Witnessing your new found ambitions and efforts is very encouraging to me. I have got to make it early this year or it will be worse than it already is. I pray that your inspiration is enough to help boost me over the hump. Thank you for being you. May God bless you for the inspiration you have given many others.

Powerful letter.. I also wrote a letter to myself. My thoughts of what was going on in my life at the time. That was the only thing that kept me sane. My ex husband was an alcoholic and abusive both physically and mentally. The bruises eventually healed but the emotional scars are always with me.
I have a blessed life now and 2010 will be my best year ever.. I will make sure of that. My future is bright and I am on the right path.
Bless you all,
Donna

Sometimes we all need a swift kick in the pants, even if it means that we have to do the kicking! I know I have been slacking the last month or so and I need to get back on track and accomplish my goals for this year. Thanks for the encouragement and all the great advice you have given out over the years.
Good luck to you and everybody in the DG family in the new year!

Dear Arlene its 2010 what are you gonna do?
Its time, this is it, you are down and you can not go anywhere but up. You have no money, no job, no credit and barely have a life. You have to stop making excuses for yourself and show your Boy's it can be done even if you are alone. You get out there and find a Mentor, beg if you have to, but get over your Fears.
Life is not about the storm thats brewing, its about Dancing in the Rain!
Arlene,
I just read your letter...I think if that doesn't motivate you nothing will. I am in your corner cheering you on. I know you can prove Kevin wrong. Rock it out and make you income for those boys.
I know you can watch those vids. Took me about a week of watching 3-5 a day some times even more. I watched every single one myself. I wanted to have everything that is here from the begining in my head. You will discover that the DG family is an awesome group of people here to help anyone whom asks for assistances. They are friendly and a awesome place to network. Best of luck to you and your family. And welcome to the DG Family!!

Looks like Matt's letter has inspired like a frieght train gaining speed on DG site! Your letter is powerful and like Matt says "it has a healing power". Best of luck to you on overcoming the obsticales that surround you. Remember that a challenge is only a challenge if you see it that way...let it become an opportunity in your mind instead and success will follow!!!

One big thing that helped me in the beginning was a promise I made to myself. I promised myself that I would not allow myself to goto bed at night until I accomplished something positive in real estate. Every night. Even if it was something like reading 2 or 3 chapters in a book. It creates an action habit, and then a little at a time you start hitting your goals. Never give up! Also don't worry about Kevin. Because people with goals expect to be believed and when their not they let time prove them right.

Nicely put Matt and a good daily goal to have!

We just gotta do it!
I am reading Deans books for the second time around, I will do that and keep these ideas in mind. Today my Father Read me the Riot Act all about how Real Estate is gone in the USA and I am crazy if I think I know what I am doing, the Investors are going to come and take my house and my husband will leave me (not that the husband leaving is a bad thing LOL) but OMG my Dad when crazy on me.
Matt Earl and Angie people like and Joe inspire me everyday!
DG Family Rocks!
Life is not about the storm thats brewing, its about Dancing in the Rain!
Your letter was straight to the point, not only for you but also for me. I've become so busy with life that I haven't had that focus for a long while that you were talking about; haven't had it for a very long time and have been suffering because of it.
Tonight, when all is quiet, I am going to write a letter to myself with a wake up call and get into Real Estate investing the right way with everyone's great advise from these blogs and Dean's books.
Thanks again!
Lisa
A great idea! Will definitely keep this one in mind!!

Matt,
pretty intense letter-it's very commendable that you make yourself accountable on this site where everyone can read about it.
I hope that you did accomplish your goals you set out for yourself for 2010, and that you do keep writing on this site to keep motivating us!
Looking forward to great success for 2011!

Fantastic stuff. I hope that newspaper article helps add to the whole perspective.
We all get those aah haa moments where we need to stop and rethink and regroup. I have kicked myself a few times already and been kicked in the relatively short time doing or should I say trying to do RE.

You're right sometimes the truth hurts but it's hurts more to deny or hide behind it. You truly are the master thanks again for all your help. I'm going to do this and probably get a major wake up call.
